Bear Butte State Park, S.D. – The Bear Butte Summit Trail will reopen Friday, Feb. 2 for visitor use. Park officials ask that all visitors who use the trail be cautious and stay on the designated trail as the effects of the Bear Butte Fire are still being assessed.
Due to more accurate mapping, the final acreage of the fire increased to 502.
All other trails, campgrounds and day use areas within the park remain open as normal.
No structures were endangered and no injuries were reported. There were no evacuations, and the park’s bison herd was not affected.
South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks would like to thank the local, state and federal firefighters who were on scene for their hard work during the fire.
