Game, Fish and Parks to Stock Rainbow Trout below Fort Randall Dam

PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) will stock 10,000 rainbow trout below Fort Randall Dam beginning this week, weather permitting.

Approximately 5,000 rainbow trout will be released on March 8, with the remaining 5,000 arriving on March 15.

Crews from Cleghorn Springs State Fish Hatchery in Rapid City will stock Shasta strain rainbow trout.

“Past research has demonstrated that this strain of rainbow trout return to the angler creel at a higher rate than others,” said Jason Sorensen, GFP fisheries biologist in Chamberlain. “They provide excellent angling opportunities for kids of all ages as well as adults.”

Rainbow trout are stocked annually below Fort Randall Dam and range between 9 and 12 inches in length.

Shoreline access and boat launching facilities below Fort Randall Dam provide opportunities for both boat and shore anglers.
