DOW Seeks Information on Saguache Poaching Incident

The Colorado Division of Wildlife is seeking information on a deer poaching incident that occurred in Saguache County on either Dec. 2 or Dec 3.

A buck deer was shot with a rifle in the Sanderson Gulch area about 10 miles southwest of the town of Saguache. A rancher found the carcass and notified Jason Surface, district wildlife manager for the area. The head of the deer had been removed which indicates that the animal was killed for its antlers. The rest of the carcass was left to rot.

There was no deer hunting season in the Saguache area at the time.

The person who poached the animal could be charged with willful destruction of wildlife which carries a felony charge.

Anyone who has information about this incident is asked to call Jason Surface at 1-719-587-6932; or Operation Game Thief at 1-877-265-6648. Callers can remain anonymous. If information leads to a conviction, the informant is eligible for a reward.
