Sleepy Hollow State Park in Clinton County, in conjunction with the Clinton County Department of Waste Management and the Eaton County Parks and Recreation Department, are hosting a “GO-Get Outdoors” guided snowshoe hike on Sunday, Feb. 21, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“Snowshoeing is becoming a growing, popular winter activity,” said Kathleen Donahue, Clinton County environmental educator. “Visitors to Sleepy Hollow State Park will have a chance to try snowshoeing, and hike through the woods and fields guided by an interpreter.”

The hike will begin at the east picnic pavilion. Interpreters will give a short orientation on Sleepy Hollow, a brief presentation on winter survival and equipment, and then depart for the woods. The hike is approximately one-mile through the pine and oak new growth forest. Participants will travel along the trails, beside the lake and across the meadows with many rest stops along the way to look for signs of the park’s winter inhabitants.

After the invigorating hike, visitors are welcome to warm up by the fireplace at the pavilion with hot apple cider and chat with the interpreters. A hot grill will be available to those who would like to bring their own food to cook-out for lunch.

“Individuals, families and groups are encouraged to GO-Get Outdoors this winter and enjoy the many recreational opportunities that are offered at Michigan state parks and recreation areas,” said Ron Olson, chief of the DNRE Recreation Division. “It’s a great way to get out of the house, enjoy some time with the family, and kick the winter blues.”

Cost is $5 per person for the snowshoe hike and advance registration is required. Also, a limited number of snowshoes will be available to rent at $5 per person. Sizes will be available in youth (under 80 lbs.), standard youth (up to 125 lbs.), small adult (up to 175 lbs.), medium adult (up to 220 lbs.), and large adult (over 220 lbs.).

To pre-register for this event or reserve a set of snowshoes, contact Kathy Donahue at 989-224-5177, Monday thru Friday, 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

Interested parties are encouraged to call the park ahead of time to check on snow conditions and updates. If it is necessary to cancel this event, a full refund will be given to all early registrants. However, the group will still go on a hike, even if there is not enough snow.

Sleepy Hollow State Park is located at 7835 E. Price Rd. in Laingsburg, just north of Lansing. All motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a 2010 Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the entrance. Cost is $24 for a resident annual and $6 for a resident daily. A non-resident annual is $29 and a non-resident daily is $8.
