Saginaw Bay Offers Spectacular Spring Waterfowl Viewing

One of the most impressive wildlife spectacles in Michigan is the north-bound spring migration of birds that is occurring right now, according to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment.

“We’ve had a huge influx of tundra swans into the Saginaw Bay area over the last few days,” said DNRE wildlife biologist Arnie Karr. “It’s at or near peak.”

Karr recommends that people interested in observing waterfowl and shorebirds should check the Fin and Feather public access site at the end of Pigeon Road at Wildfowl Bay State Wildlife Area in Huron County.

“People will need to boots to get out to where they can really see what’s going on,” Karr said. “About two miles south of there, the Sumac Island access site at the end of Geiger Road is also a good spot. At that site you can view the migration from the parking area.”

Other good areas to view the waterfowl migration at Saginaw Bay include Fish Point State Wildlife Area in Tuscola County and Nayanquing Point State Wildlife Area in Bay County.
