NRP Continuing Search For Missing Boater

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police (NRP) is investigating a boating accident that was reported Monday, June 29 at 10 p.m., near the area of the Potomac River approximately two miles from the Route 301 bridge.

An investigation revealed that a 20 foot steel-hall vessel was traveling from Pope’s Creek area on the Maryland side of the Potomac River to Mathias Point, Virginia. The vessel encountered high winds and rough waters, causing it to take on water and sink.

Two people were aboard the vessel. Glen Martin Dawson, age 52 of King George Va. was able to swim to shore and summon help. The other occupant, Daniel Ray Myers, 36, of King George Va., is missing and presumed drowned.

Units from NRP, United States Coast Guard, Navy, Virginia Marine Resource Commission Officers and Charles County Fire Department searched throughout the night and are continuing their search by vessel, air, and employing side scan sonar. The NRP Special Operations Division is continuing an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

Neither occupant was wearing their life jackets at the time of the accident. Last year, Maryland had 17 boating fatalities, 16 were not wearing their life jackets.
