New Mexico Fishing Reports September 8

Animas River – The flow is 192 cfs. No report.

Chama River – Upper section flow is 31 cfs and dry fly fishing is fair to good above the town of Chama with caddis, PMD’s, and grasshoppers. Below El Vado Dam, the flow is 797 cfs and the water is murky. Best fishing has been down river where fishing is good for browns up to 18 inches with black Panther Martins or night crawlers. Stocker-size rainbows are fair.

San Juan River – Upper section-Catch and Release flow is 784 cfs and visibility is 3 feet. Fishing is good from Cable Hole to Texas Hole using #22-26 olive, gray, black or brown midge pupa and larva. Below Texas Hole, chocolate or gray foam wing emergers, RS2s or WD40s are good. Dry fly action is fair from Simon Canyon downstream with Griffith gnats, comparaduns, or Parachute Adams.

Lower section – Open waters, fishing is good for stocker-size rainbows with worms, salmon eggs and the same flies as for the upper section.

Abiquiu Lake – Fishing pressure has been light and reports are slow for most species. A few smallmouth bass have been caught from shore on worms.

El Vado Lake – A few browns have been taken, but most catches have been carp.

Heron Lake – Kokanee are very good at 32-40 feet trolling in a zig-zag pattern. Orange or red spinners, white Z-rays or cripplures baited with corn are working well. Shore fishing for trout is slow with little pressure.

Jackson Lake – Trout are deep and fishing is slow with spinners.

Lake Farmington – No report.

Morgan Lake – Catfish are fair at night with chicken or stink bait. Bass should pick up in the next few weeks.

Navajo Lake – Pike are slow to fair with big spoons or 10-inch worms. Kokanee are fair trolling Arnie’s lures or double whammies. No reports on other species.

Northeast

Cimarron River – The flows are 42 cfs below Eagle Nest Dam and 40 cfs near Cimarron. Fishing is good in the mornings with dry dropper set-ups and attractor flies mid-day. Caddis, trico, and BWO hatches are still in progress. Panther Martins, salmon eggs or worms are always a good bet.

Costilla Creek – The flows are 74 cfs below the dam and 79 cfs near the town of Costilla. Dry fly action is good with hoppers or other terrestrials.

Red River – Flows at Questa are 20 cfs, and 56 cfs below the hatchery. Fishing is good below the hatchery with dry dropper set-ups, bead head nymphs, or black woolly buggers. Bait fishermen might try salmon eggs or Power Bait.

Rio Grande – Flows are 65 cfs near Cerro and 219 cfs below the Taos Junction Bridge. The water is murky and trout are good with bead head nymphs, #12-16 copper johns, Hare’s Ear nymphs, prince nymphs and woolly buggers. No reports on other species.

Rio Hondo – The upper Hondo is fishing well with hoppers or stimulators. Try copper johns or bead head nymphs in the lower Hondo.

Rio Pueblo – Flow is 23 cfs. No report this week.

Cabresto Lake – Fishing is fair to good with bead head nymphs or worms.

Charette Lakes – Reports are slow. An occasional 14-16 inch rainbow has been landed using with Power Bait or worms. No reports on perch.

Clayton Lake –There has been light pressure and fishing is generally slow. A few catfish have been caught on night crawlers and a few walleye have been picked up using Rapalas.

Eagle Nest Lake – Trout are good trolling Platte River Specials. Salmon are deep and trolling is slow with Platte River Specials or Kokanee Killers. Perch are good with worms. Shore fishing is slow.

Lake Alice and Lake Maloya – Trout are fair at Lake Alice and good at Maloya in the early mornings and evenings with woolly buggers, Pistol Petes, and orange, green or pink Power Bait.

Maxwell Lakes – There has been no pressure and no fishing report.

Santa Cruz Lake – The water level is low and trout are good from boats and poor from the bank. Power Bait and salmon eggs are working best.

Shuree Ponds – Fishing is fair to good. Best results have been with hoppers, beetles, and other dry terrestrials.

Springer Lakes – Pressure has been light and fishing is slow for all species.

West-Central, including the Jemez Mountains

Jemez River, East Fork, Guadalupe and San Antonio – Flow on the Jemez River is 12 cfs. The streams are low and clear. Dry fly action remains good in the upper streams using terrestrials or yellow stimulators. Panther Martins, Power Bait or worms many be successful in the lower shaded areas.

Metro Drainages – No report this week.

Bluewater Lake – Fishing has been slow for all species.

Cochiti Lake – The water is clearing and there has been light pressure. Catfish are good on the east side of the lake using worms or chicken liver. A few 25-30 inch pike have been caught on large lures. No reports on other species.

Fenton Lake – The water is fairly clear and fishing is good from shore with pink Power Bait, salmon eggs or worms.

Tingley Beach – South Pond catch and release – Trout fishing is poor and won’t improve until the temperatures are cooler. Children’s and Central Ponds – Bluegills are excellent with worms under a bobber. Catfish are good in the mornings and evenings using hotdogs or stink bait. No reports on bass.

East–Central, including the Pecos River

Coyote Creek – Flow is 1.0 cfs. The water is low, and fishing is slow.

Pecos River – Flows are 54 cfs near Pecos and 97 cfs below Sumner Dam. Hatches of caddis, yellow sallies and some late golden stones are ongoing, and fishing is good. Best flies have been miracle nymphs, RS2′s, wonder baetis, batwing emergers, headlight sallies, never-sink caddis, and parachute pheasant tails.

Conchas Lake – Walleye are in deep water and are reported as slow with minnows. White bass are good jigging and trolling crank baits, spinners or worms. Catfish are good at night with chicken liver. No reports on other species.

Morphy Lake – Trout are fair with spinners or Power Bait.

Santa Rosa Lake – Catfish are fair on cut bait, worms or chicken liver. No reports on other species.

Storrie Lake – Trout are reported as slow using Power Bait or fireballs. No reports on other species.

Sumner Lake – Winter trout waters, stilling basin – Pressure has been light and fishing is slow for all species. There are a few reports of catfish being caught from the bank with chicken liver or worms. A 7-pound Flathead catfish was caught from the West Bank.

Ute Lake – White bass are scattered, but jigging spoon slabs at 30 feet may pick up a few. Smallmouth and largemouth bass are slow using top water lures. Catfish are good in 4-12 feet of water with stink bait or minnows. No reports on other species.

Southwest

Gila River – The flow is 62 cfs and fishing is slow.

Rio Grande – The flow is 1,120 cfs below Elephant Butte Dam. No fishing report.

Bill Evans Lake: Winter trout waters – Reports are slow for all species.

Caballo Lake – White bass are good from the bank with minnows or worms and trolling by the dam with bombers or sassy shad. Catfish are good with chicken liver or worms. A few walleye have been caught with worms. No reports on other species.

Elephant Butte Lake – White bass are good with shiners or white jigging spoons. Striped bass are good trolling live bait. Several 25-pounders were caught last week. Reports are fair for smallmouth bass using top water lures. Walleye are slow with a few being caught on jigs or live bait. Catfish are good with liver or shrimp. No reports on other species.

Glenwood Ponds – Stocker-size trout are slow with worms or salmon eggs.

Lake Roberts – Pressure has been light and trout are fair with Power Bait, salmon eggs or worms. A 3-pound, 18-inch rainbow was reported last Saturday. Catfish are good with worms or chicken liver. No reports on bass.

Quemado Lake – Trout are slow with Power Bait or worms, but an occasional 16-18 inch rainbow has been landed. Tiger muskies are slow to fair using Z-rays, spinners or worms.

Snow Lake – Trout are slow using Power Bait, worms or salmon eggs.

Southeast

Black River – Flow is 9.6 cfs. There is no fishing report.

Bonito Creek – The creek is barely a trickle and there is no report.

Rio Ruidoso – Flow is at 1.8 cfs. Trout are reported as fair with Pistol Petes, worms or salmon eggs.

Bonito Lake – Fishing is fair with Power Bait, salmon eggs or worms.

Bottomless Lakes: Winter trout waters – There will be no more reports until stocking resumes in the fall.

Brantley Reservoir – There has been no pressure and no fishing report. A mandatory catch and release is in place at Brantley Lake from the dept. of Game and Fish. Pesticides, DDT’s have been found in the fish, do not keep or eat them.

Grindstone Reservoir – Trout are fair with Power Bait, salmon eggs or worms. No reports on catfish.

Lake Van: Winter trout waters – No report.
