SALIDA, Colo.–- The Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) is hosting the 17h Annual Arkansas River Cleanup/Greenup (CUGU) on Saturday, May 10. Each year over 350 volunteers scour the banks of the Arkansas River between Leadville and Canon City to pick up litter and debris left behind from the previous summer.
Individuals and groups may sign up the day of the event between 8:30-9:30 a.m. at the Hayden Meadows Recreation Site south of Leadville off Highway 24, the Buena Vista River Park on East Main Street in Buena Vista, the AHRA Visitor Center at 307 W. Sackett Street in Salida, the Sugar Bush Store on Highway 50 in Howard, or Barry’s Den Restaurant on Highway 50 in Texas Creek.
Everyone that signs up will receive trash bags and a volunteer button that will serve as their ticket to the volunteer picnic. The picnic takes place at Riverside Park in Salida from noon until 3 p.m. following the day’s clean-up/green-up activities and will include food, prizes, fun and entertainment. Renowned DJ Lou along with Real West Audio will play a variety of music and conduct some lively contests during the picnic. Everyone in the community is invited to join in the fun.
AHRA is working with the Greater Arkansas River Nature Association (GARNA) and Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) to make the 17th annual CUGU a success and invites everyone to participate in this huge volunteer event that kicks off the summer season on the Arkansas River.
