DNR To Lift Open Burning Restrictions On Final Two Counties

Seasonal restrictions on open burning will be lifted in Lake and Cook counties effective at 8 a.m. on Monday, June 1, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. These are the final two Minnesota counties to lift burning restrictions.

“While fires continue to be a problem in central Minnesota due to the prolonged dry conditions, ample rain and warm temperatures have spurred green-up in northeastern Minnesota,” said Steve Simmer, wildfire supervisor.

Once again, all residents across the state can now obtain a permit to burn vegetative materials. Permits may not be available every day due to erratic weather conditions or independent regulations set by municipalities. Local forestry or government offices should be contacted to find out if permits will be issued on a given day.

If drought conditions worsen in central Minnesota, or occur elsewhere in the state, burning restrictions could be imposed again this year. However, once trees are leafed out and grasses are green, open burning is normally permitted throughout the summer season.

Simmer said people should not take chances with fires if weather conditions are marginal. Possessing a burning permit does not guarantee that a fire will be safe. It is the permittee’s responsibility to assess weather conditions and keep the fire under control.
