USFWS Statement on Status of Gray Wolves in the Western Great Lakes

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has reached a settlement agreement with plaintiffs in a lawsuit challenging the Service’s 2009 rule removing
Endangered Species Act protections for gray wolves in the Western Great Lakes. Under the terms of the agreement, which must still be approved by the court, the Service will provide an additional opportunity for public comment on the rule to ensure compliance with the Administrative Procedures Act.

Gray wolves in the Western Great Lakes area have exceeded recovery goals and continue to thrive under state management. However, the Service agrees with plaintiffs that additional public review and comment was required under federal law prior to making that final decision.

Upon acceptance of this agreement by the court, and while the Service
gathers additional public comment, gray wolves in the Western Great Lakes
area will again be protected under the Endangered Species Act. All
restrictions and requirements in place under the Act prior to the delisting
will be reinstated. In Minnesota, gray wolves will be considered
threatened; elsewhere in the region, gray wolves will be designated as
endangered. The Service will continue to work with states and tribes to
address wolf management issues while Western Great Lakes gray wolves remain
under the protection of the Act.

This settlement agreement does not affect the status of gray wolves in
other parts of the United States.

  1. This battle over protection of gray wolves continues because the tree huggin anti hunting fraternities push the objective every chance they get. I believe it’s safe to say that many of us outdoorsmen and women are fed-up with the USFWS bowing to the opposition’s demands. Wolf numbers are well above the recovery and sustainable levels. Hand, AND LEAVE, wolf management back to the states!

Response and action from the state of Michigan found here http://outdoornewsdaily.com/index.php/archives/7657 regarding this subject.

  3. What’s to say or comment about if the numbers are in the right area? We all know who wants to comment and the HSUS filed a damn lawsuit to sway the opinion which made the USFSW turn tail and put the wolves back on the endangered species list. Crying shame!

  4. I’ve got nothing against the wolf but it seems like the antis feel that every hunter must hate wolves or just hopes that we can one day shoot them. I dont think thats the case for most hunters. Surely the antis must be bighting their lips right now with the announcement of Montana have a wolf hunting season.
