Pinos Altos Mountain Lion Captured And Killed

Update below regarding Pinos Altos Mountain Lion Attack.

A mountain lion that may have killed a Pinos Altos man was captured in a snare and killed Wednesday morning.

The lion was an average-sized adult male weighing approximately 125 pounds. It had four bullet holes in it that appeared to be from buckshot. A Department of Game and Fish officer had shot and wounded a lion with buckshot June 19 near the home of 55-year-old Robert Nawojski.

Probable Cougar Tracks Found in Delta County Michigan

Michigan Department of Natural Resources wildlife officials today announced that new wildlife tracks recently found in Delta County most likely are from a cougar.

A U.S. Forest Service biologist, Janet Ekstrum, who was conducting a Kirtland’s warbler survey near Rapid River June 9, discovered some large animal tracks and contacted the DNR’s Gladstone office.

DNR Wildlife Technician Bill Rollo responded immediately. Rollo photographed the track, which he estimated to be about 10 hours old, and followed it for about a quarter-mile until he lost it.

Rollo, who had examined another set of tracks found 42 miles away last March, said these tracks were very similar. “The animals that made these tracks are similar in size,” Rollo said.

Donated Venison Cleared for Distribution to Needy

DES MOINES — Food pantries in Iowa have been given approval to resume serving deer venison to the needy after sampling of the ground meat for lead indicated only trace amounts.

A total of 10 samples of ground venison from a food pantry were tested by the University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory over the weekend. All 10 samples had less than 1 part per million of lead, eight had no detectable amounts and two had only trace amounts.

Deer Meat Donated to Needy Being Tested for Lead

DES MOINES - Distribution of deer venison through food pantries around the state is being stopped until samples can be taken to determine if there is a risk due to contamination from lead fragments.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources, which administers the HUSH (Help Us Stop Hunger) program, is working with the Iowa Department of Public Health to collect and sample deer meat to determine if there is potential for lead contamination.

DNR Announces Track in Delta County May Be From a Cougar

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources today announced that a wildlife track found in Delta County is most likely from a cougar.

“We were contacted by a private landowner stating he may have a cougar track on his property. The landowner covered the track and on Monday morning DNR staff investigated the site,” said Steve Chadwick, acting furbearer specialist for DNR. “Wildlife staff took photos and measurements of the tracks. They followed the tracks as far as possible but there was no sighting of a cougar.”
