Rules in Place for Mentored Youth Hunts this Fall

July 23, 2008 By: NewsEngine Category: Hunting News No Comments →

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Following action by the Game, Fish and Parks Commission, a framework of rules is in place to allow mentored youth hunting in South Dakota.

The commission’s action was prompted by a law passed in the last session of the Legislature that established mentored youth hunting. Now the rules are in place to allow youth who are accompanied by a mentor to hunt this fall.

While the rules governing mentored youth hunting are lengthy, the commission’s action at its July meeting in Rapid City was limited to rules governing big game hunting. GFP Game Program Administrator Tom Kirschenmann explained to commissioners that since most of the requirements for mentored youth hunting are set in statute, they do not need to be duplicated in the department’s rules.

Deadline To Apply For Prairie Chicken, Fall Turkey Hunts Is July 25

July 22, 2008 By: NewsEngine Category: Hunting News No Comments →

Hunters who wish to apply for one of 186 permits for the 2008 Minnesota prairie chicken season or for one of 7,660 permits for the fall turkey hunt must do so by July 25. Applications are available wherever hunting and fishing licenses are sold, according to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Application materials and maps of permit areas for both hunts are available on the DNR Web site at www.mndnr.gov/hunting. Successful applicants will be notified by mail after purchasing their permit at one of 1,800 Electronic License System agents across Minnesota.

Bill Penning, DNR farmland wildlife program coordinator, said that there should be enough turkey hunting spots to meet the current demand and that the odds of being drawn are very high. In 2007, hunters harvested 695 turkeys in the fall hunt with hunter success typically about 25 percent.

July 22, 2008 By: NewsEngine Category: Deer Hunting News, Hunting News No Comments →

MADISON – Deer hunters in Wisconsin who have lost or did not initially receive their buck harvest authorization stickers will be able to get replacement stickers starting this year, state wildlife officials have announced.

“Starting this year, hunters will have the opportunity to pick up a replacement buck sticker if they lost a sticker which would still be valid, or did not receive one from the registration station in 2007,” said Jason Fleener, assistant deer ecologist with the state Department of Natural Resources. “But replacements are limited to only one per year, regardless of how many the customer claims to have lost or did not receive from the deer registration station.”
