The 2010-11 mourning dove seasons in South Carolina will resume as follows: Nov. 19-26; and Dec. 21–Jan. 15. Legal hunting hours for mourning dove season are from 30 minutes before sunrise until sunset. The daily bag limit is 15 birds per day. The state’s mourning dove season is set each year by the S.C. Natural Resources (DNR) Board within a framework of regulations and timetables issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The arrival of “late season” migratory doves can drastically improve hunting opportunity on public and private dove fields across the state. Those hunters willing to scout for concentrations of doves during this time of year are often rewarded by opportunities which equal or exceed those found during the early segment of the season. A county-by-county list of the forty-six public dove fields can be obtained by writing: DNR, Attn: Public Dove Fields, PO Box 167, Columbia, SC 29202, or by calling (803) 734-3886 in Columbia. The Public Dove Field List is also available at County Extension Service offices, Soil and Water Conservation District offices, and local DNR offices.

As Mississippi’s 2010-11 waterfowl season kicks off, hunters, landowners, and farmers are reminded to become familiar with existing federal baiting regulations before hunting migratory birds. Along with setting season frameworks, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) maintains the authority to enforce baiting regulations.

The USFWS and MDWFP would like to remind hunters and farmers it is legal to take waterfowl over unharvested standing crops, flooded standing crops or croplands where seeds or grain have been scattered solely as the result of normal agriculture planting, harvesting, post-harvest manipulation, or normal soil stabilization practices.

Strong numbers of geese remain on Lake Etter and other watering sources near Spearman. Lubbock hunters have scored good shoots over plowed ground. Sandhill crane hunting has been fair for decoying action. Duck hunting has been fair to good on playas, though hunter participation has waned. Duck season ends at sunset Jan. 23.
