Desert bighorn skulls at New Mexico auction

bighorn sheep skull auctionEight desert bighorn sheep skulls and horns that were recovered from ranges in southern New Mexico go up for sale this week in a silent auction at the Department of Game and Fish office in Santa Fe and at Bob Gerding’s Hunting & Fishing Show in Albuquerque.

The skulls, six rams and two ewes, became available for sale in November 2011 when the State Game Commission removed desert bighorn sheep from the state threatened and endangered species list. Protected game animals and their skulls are the property of the state. Proceeds from the auctions will be used to augment the Department’s bighorn sheep restoration program.

Eleven Mile State Park Hosts Ice Fishing Tournaments

The 2012 Sports Column Colorado Classic Ice Fishing Tournament, hosted by Colorado State Parks and produced by the 11 Mile Marina at Eleven Mile State Park, held the opening Grand Slam event on Jan. 7. The Grand Slam was the first in a three-contest series and 115 teams from all over Colorado competed for over $7,000.00 in prize money.

The big winners were John and Tyler Elwell from Woodland Park, taking the Northern Pike category in total weight and Big Fish Pot with a single pike weighing 15.09-lbs. for a combined cash prize of $1,207.00. Brandon White and Bryan Johnson of Salida captured the Trout category with four fish weighing 15.655-lbs., including the big trout of the day tipping the scales at 6.875-lbs., to take home $1,207.00.

Arrows flying in statewide student archery competition

Though Oklahoma’s popular archery hunting seasons for species like deer, black bear and antelope are done for the 2011-12 season, some might say the state is still “in the thick of archery season” – at least if you are involved with the Oklahoma National Archery in the Schools Program.

The program, operated by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and often referred to as OKNASP, is hosting regional shoots across Oklahoma throughout February in which 2,500 students are competing for a spot in the upcoming annual state shoot. Three regional shoots have already been held in Oklahoma City and Tulsa, and two more are scheduled before the end of the month – one Feb. 15 at the Stephens County Fair and Expo Center in Duncan, and another Feb. 29 at the McAlester Expo Center in McAlester.

Custer State Park to Host Snowshoe Hike

On Feb. 11, visitors to Custer State Park will have the opportunity to experience the winter sights and sounds of the popular park, by way of a pair of snowshoes.

The Lover’s Leap Snowshoe Hike will guide participants through a dense pine forest, meandering near Grace Coolidge Creek. The three-mile hike is geared toward beginners, allowing participants the opportunity to try the recreational event and explore some of the park’s most beautiful winter scenery.

Two hikes will depart that day, leaving at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. from the Peter Norbeck Visitor Center. Snowshoes are provided, but reservations are required to borrow snowshoes by calling 605-255-4464.
