Pequest Open House and Fishing Flea Market

The NJ DEP Division of Fish and Wildlife will be holding its annual Open House and Fishing Flea Market at the Pequest Trout Hatchery and Natural Resource Education Center on Saturday and Sunday, March 27 and 28. The event runs from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on both days, and admission is free.

The Open House is held prior to the Opening Day of Trout Season and provides the Division of Fish and Wildlife an opportunity to highlight its state of the art trout raising facility, as well as showcase the multitude of programs the Division is responsible for. The Open House also serves as a reminder that spring, and the Opening Day of Trout Season (April 10) is just around the corner.

Annual NASP Archery Tournament Held In Newberry

The arrows flew downrange, impacting the targets with loud “thwacks.” The intent archers concentrated on the correct form as they shot.

At the end of the day, Lewis Anna Woodbury Elementary School (Fort Meade), Union Academy Middle School (Bartow) and West Nassau High School (Callahan) were the first-place schools in the 2010 Florida National Archery in the Schools Program state tournament held in Newberry Feb. 27.

The tournament was in two formats: a live tournament competition at the Easton-Newberry Sports Complex and a virtual tournament for schools that couldn’t afford to travel, said Steve Robbins, Florida NASP coordinator.

Turkey Hunting Workshop April 10 in Holderness

A free workshop covering the basics of hunting wild turkeys is being offered by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department on Saturday, April 10, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Owl Brook Hunter Education Center on Perch Pond Road in Holderness. Pre-registration is required. Space is limited. To sign up for the workshop, or for more information, call (603)536-3954.

The clinic will be conducted by Fish and Game hunter education instructor Dave Priebe, a member of the professional staff of Quaker Boy, a turkey call manufacturer. The seminar will cover the basics of turkey hunting, turkey calling and turkey hunting safety. Fish and Game wildlife programs supervisor Mark Ellingwood will talk about turkey natural history and behavior. In addition, participants will be given a demonstration on shotgun patterning at the range. No lunch will be served, but there will be a short break for those who wish to bring a bag lunch or snack.

History of the Civilian Conservation Corps

“The Legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Grayling Area” will be the topic of a presentation at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 7, at the Hartwick Pines Logging Museum in Grayling. Department of Natural Resources and Environment historian Rob Burg will present the program that highlights the work the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) did in Grayling, Gaylord, Houghton Lake, Kalkaska, Mio and Roscommon.

The CCC planted more than 400 million trees in Michigan, fought thousands of forest fires across the country and developed some of America’s most beloved national parks. In the Grayling and surrounding areas alone, the CCC operated the Higgins Lake Nursery, built the Logging Museum at Hartwick Pines, the Conservation Training School (now the Ralph A. McMullan Center) at Higgins Lake, the Reedsburg Dam near Houghton Lake, operated the Grayling Fish Hatchery, and made improvements at the Grayling Winter Sports Park (Hanson Hills).
