Craig and Meeker Youth Cast & Blast Clinics

The Colorado Division of Wildlife Hunter Outreach program is sponsoring two very special Youth Cast & Blast Clinics in northwest Colorado. The first clinic will be in Meeker on Saturday, Aug. 9 and the second clinic will be held in Craig on Sunday, Aug. 10. Youth Cast & Blast clinics are designed for young people (10 to 17) who want to learn to fly fish and to shoot a shotgun.

Space is limited to the first 32 young people for each event who pay the $10 registration fee, which covers the cost of beverages and lunch. The Northwest Colorado Outfitters Association has graciously volunteered to prepare the food for participants at each event.

Participants at the Meeker Cast & Blast need to have transportation to and from the Oak Ridge State Wildlife Area for the event, which runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. For Craig participants, transportation will be provided from Moffat County High School for the all day event. Craig participants will leave the high school at 7:45 a.m. and will return at approximately 5:30 p.m.

Eddy Discover Center Offers Nature Programs in August

The Gerald Eddy Discovery Center has several nature programs scheduled for August. The center is located at Waterloo State Recreation Area near Chelsea.

All programs are suited for children ages seven and up. The programs all start at 11 a.m. and include:

Native American Sand Art. On Friday, Aug. 1, participants can hear Native American stories and make a sand-art project to take home.

Massasauga Rattlesnake. On Saturday, Aug. 2, participants can learn about Michigan’s only venomous snake species. There will be no live snakes during the presentation.

ABCs of Nature Hike. On Wednesday, Aug. 6, participants can walk the Oakwood trail with the park interpreter and look and learn about natural objects for each letter of the alphabet.

Carl T. Johnson Hunting & Fishing Center Offers Outdoor Recreation

The Carl T. Johnson Hunting & Fishing Center, located at Mitchell State Park in Cadillac, is offering an array of outdoor recreation programs in August.

The programs include:

Picnic in the Park. On Saturday, Aug. 2, there will be a picnic on the front lawn of the center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Donations are welcome.

Nature Discovery - Wildlife Sampler. On Saturday, Aug. 2, Jim McGrath will present programs on a variety of wildlife. The programs will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon and again from 1 to 3 p.m. at the center.

Archery and Pellet Gun Ranges. Also on Saturday, Aug. 2, the center’s archery and pellet gun ranges will be open from 6 to 8 p.m.

Sleepy Hollow State Park Partners with the Lansing Parks and Recreation

Sleepy Hollow State Park has partnered with the Lansing Parks and Recreation Department to provide universally accessible nature experiences for people of all ages, the Department of Natural Resources announced today.

Throughout July and August, any youth or adult who signs up for the “Therapeutic Recreation Program” will have the opportunity to ride a bus to Sleepy Hollow State Park and explore multiple nature-based activities, including boating, fishing, nature hikes with the park’s Explorer Guide, archery, swimming or just relaxing on the beach. The program is designed to provide universal accessibility to outdoor recreational experiences.

Hunting Heritage Workshop Offered at NCSU Centennial Campus

RALEIGH, N.C. – A hunting heritage workshop at the Centennial Campus Center for Wildlife Education will take a look at the popular and important outdoor recreation.

The three-hour interactive course on Wednesday, Aug. 6, from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. is designed for both educators and other adults who are interested in the history, traditions and ethics of hunting, as well as hunters’ vital role in wildlife conservation. Hunting scenarios will be encountered indoors with the help of a laser shot simulator.

Pre-registration is required and class size is limited to 15. Environmental Education Certification credit is available. This workshop should not be confused with the statewide Hunter Education course, which is required for first-time hunting licenses.
