To Shoot Like An Olympian Think BRASS

July 15, 2008 By: NewsEngine Category: Shooting News No Comments →

Hunters who want the proficiency of the world’s elite shooters seeking gold in August at Beijing’s 2008 Summer Olympic Games should think BRASS, says Tim Lawhern, Department of Natural Resources hunter education administrator.

“Good shooters practice the fundamentals,” Lawhern said. “The only difference between advanced shooters and basic shooters is the advanced shooters do the basics better.”

The basics, he says, can be summed up in BRASS — breath control, relax, aim, squeeze and the shot. And part of targeting the basics is dry-firing – which means completely unloading the firearm before the trigger is pulled. However, remember to check the owner’s manual or with the rifle manufacturer before using this method. An alternative is to use inert ammunition or snap caps for practice.

Rifle and Pistol Ranges at Island Lake State Recreation Area Closing For Repairs

July 15, 2008 By: NewsEngine Category: Shooting News No Comments →

The rifle and pistol ranges at Island Lake State Recreation Area near Brighton will be closed for repairs starting Thursday, July 17, the Department of Natural Resources announced today. The ranges will reopen on Thursday, July 31.

Earthen berms at the ranges will be repaired for the first time in nearly 10 years, according to Dennis Fox, DNR supervisor for Recruitment and Retention Programs. Due to safety needs for work crews who will be operating heavy equipment in the area, the ranges will be closed
temporarily during the repair work. The sporting clays, trap and skeet shooting services at the range will remain available to the public.

The repairs are necessary to ensure that more costly work on the berms does not have to be done in the future. Berms are used at the ranges to stop and contain shot. The repairs are being funded by the Game and Fish Protection Fund, a restricted fund comprised of hunting and fishing license fees, and federal funding, Fox said.

Tom Stewart, a certified trap instructor who also is certified through the NRA/ATA, will be instructing women in beginning trap shooting. Albert Massey, the second instructor, will offer instruction in five stand if women with a little more experience wish to try this challenging clay-target game.

Right-to-Carry in National Parks and Wildlife Refuges Comment Period Extended

July 09, 2008 By: NewsEngine Category: Shooting News, Political Outdoors No Comments →

Like a quarterback taking a knee in the fourth quarter, two of Congress’s most ardent opponents of our Right to Keep and Bear Arms are trying to run out the clock on efforts to enhance your right to self-defense in our national parks and wildlife refuges.

For two months, we have been asking NRA members and gun owners to submit comments in support of allowing law-abiding citizens to carry their legally-owned firearms in national parks and wildlife refuges — and tens of thousand of you have done so. The deadline to submit comments expired on June 30 — or so we thought.

Nevada’s Right-to-Carry Permit Holders

July 02, 2008 By: NewsEngine Category: Shooting News, Political Outdoors No Comments →

As many of you have been made aware, as of Tuesday, July 1, all Nevada CCW permits will no longer qualify as an alternative to a National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) through the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This action is a result of Nevada’s loss of exemption due to an audit conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) in 2004 which uncovered a number of Brady Law violations.
