Deadline to apply for Arizona shooting range grant funds

Shooting clubs, sportsmen’s groups and government agencies involved in the development, improvement or maintenance of public shooting ranges, including archery ranges, have until 5 p.m. (MST) on Tuesday, Jan. 17 to submit their applications for grant funds from the Arizona Game and Fish Department.

Grants are available through a competitive application process each year. The Arizona Game and Fish Commission determines how much money is available, but generally the total is about $100,000. The maximum grant award is $50,000 per project. Privately owned and for-profit ranges are not eligible for this program.

DNR Offers Beginning Handgun Shooting Class for Women

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is offering an Introduction to Handgun Shooting class through the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) program in Linwood, near Bay City, on Saturday, March 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Hosted by Linwood-Bay Sportsman’s Club, with instruction by the International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA), this popular class teaches women all of the basics of handgun safety and use.

The morning session will include an overview of handgun safety and the opportunity to shoot (live fire) .22 LR handguns. After lunch, the IDPA will set up a scenario where participants will shoot on the move while using cover. Women will also have the opportunity to shoot larger-caliber handguns.

Proposed Design Balances Needs For Northern Arizona Shooting Range

The Arizona Game and Fish Department is hosting an informational open house to present the draft master site-plan for the Northern Arizona Shooting Range on Thursday, March 3 from 5:30-8 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Game and Fish Flagstaff regional office at 3500 S. Lake Mary Road.

“This is a great opportunity for the public to provide input on the latest draft design, and get first-hand information about the efforts the department is taking to balance the needs for a shooting range and being good neighbors in the community,” said Jay Cook, chief of shooting ranges for Game and Fish.

On display at the self-paced open house will be the latest proposed range design, capabilities of the facility, and examples of range construction methods that assure safety and further mitigate sound.

Connecticut Gun Registration Bill Introduced

A bill introduced in Connecticut would require all firearms in the state to be registered.

House Bill 5800, introduced by Representative Toni Walker (D- New Haven), would require newly purchased firearms from dealers or from private sales be registered with the Department of Public Safety within 10 days of purchase. All currently owned firearms would also need to be registered within 10 days of the bill going into effect.

Additionally, owners would be required to renew registrations on their firearms every five years and would have to report if a firearm was sold, lost, or stolen.
