The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is warning citizens that a white-tailed deer in Virginia has tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). As a result, North Carolina taxidermists can no longer accept full heads for mounts from Virginia and must inform wildlife officers if they receive one. In addition, anyone bringing a deer from Virginia, or the 15 other states or two Canadian provinces where CWD has been detected, must follow North Carolina processing and packaging regulations. States where CWD has been detected include Colorado, Wyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska, Montana, Wisconsin, New Mexico, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Illinois, Utah, West Virginia, New York, Kansas, Michigan and, now, Virginia. It has also been detected in Canada’s Alberta and Saskatchewan provinces. Read more..

North Dakota Spring Turkey Season Set

The North Dakota Game and Fish Department is offering 6,640 wild turkey licenses for the spring hunting season, down 495 from 2009. The 7 percent decrease is a result of poor turkey production in the badlands units of western North Dakota. The number of hunting units is reduced from 29 to 22, after several smaller units in the eastern part of the state were combined into larger units. The number of units and unit boundaries now coincides with the fall season. Unit 21 (most of Hettinger and Adams counties) will remain closed in 2010 due to lack of turkeys in the unit. Read more..

Fish Salvage to Take Place at Carter Lake

All fishing length and daily bag limits at Carter Lake will be rescinded from Jan. 31 through Sept. 30 so fish salvage may take place, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. The existing fish community in the Douglas County lake will be renovated this fall as part of a lake restoration project. "Normally, when we make a request to relax regulations for a fish salvage, we recommend allowing the use of a variety of techniques not normally legal," said Don Gabelhouse, Fisheries Division administrator. "In this case, where we share Carter Lake with the State of Iowa, which has a different set of salvage regulations, we need to be consistent across the lake." Read more..

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is developing plans to stock flathead catfish and channel catfish in the Rock River later this year as part of a continuing effort to speed the recovery of the river’s fishery in the aftermath of a June 2009 fish kill. Tens of thousands of sport fish were lost in the Rock River fish kill event first reported on June 20-21, 2009. At that time, dead fish were discovered in the Rock River in an area from two miles north of Grand Detour to 50 miles downstream at Prophetstown. The IDNR stocked the river with smallmouth bass and northern pike last summer and channel catfish last fall in the aftermath of the fish kill. Read more..
