Wyoming Ice Anglers Reminded Of Caution

Ice fishing came early to much of Wyoming this year with sub-zero temperatures of early December producing good ice conditions on many of the states lakes and reservoirs. But even though ice may appear safe, anglers are advised to use caution. "There are lots of factors affecting ice development including underwater springs, strong currents, inlets or high winds," said Paul Mavrakis, Sheridan area regional fisheries supervisor. "Conditions can vary on a daily basis due to temperature changes. If there is any question as to ice safety, it is best to avoid a situation that could result in an accident. Common sense and caution are still the best defenses when ice fishing." Read more..

Second Consecutive Record Bear Harvest Reported in Tennessee

A new record for black bear harvest has been established for 2009, according to Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency reports. Through the various seasons this year, the 2009 harvest of 566 surpassed the previous record of 446 set just last year during 2008. The harvest in each county by season is as follows: Sept. 26-Oct. 30 archery-only: Blount (4), Carter (39), Cocke (17), Greene (11), Johnson (28), Monroe (4), Sevier (3), Sullivan (18), Unicoi (13), Washington (10). Anglers kept off North Dakota lakes last winter because of record snowfall are finding access to frozen waters much easier so far this year. Robert Timian, enforcement chief for the North Dakota Game and Fish Department, said many anglers are taking advantage of this year’s improved travel conditions. “There already has been a flurry of ice fishing activity, especially in the eastern half of the state,” Timian said. “With that said, anglers need to be reminded that unoccupied fish houses left on the ice must be identified.” Read more..

Colorado Boating And Camping Fees Increased

Fees at Colorado State Parks for camping, reservations and boat registrations will increase on Jan. 1, 2010. The daily entry fees and the cost of annual passes will remain the same. The Colorado State Parks Board approved the new fees in September. Camping fees will rise by $2 per night, reservation fees will increase by $2 and boating registration fees will go up by $10 to $25, depending on the size of the vessel. The fee increases are part of a budget reduction strategy that Colorado State Parks has undertaken to manage a $3 million shortfall in state funding for operations in fiscal year 2009-2010 due to the economic downturn. State parks will rely more on user fees to fund operation. Read more..
