The Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) has charged Donald Robert Wharton, 44, of Crisfield, Md. with possession and transportation of unculled oysters. On December 23, a Somerset County Sheriff’s deputy who was investigating a suspicious vehicle complaint on William Maddox Road in Crisfield found unculled oysters in Wharton’s truck. “We must all understand the importance of following the rules for taking oysters,” said Maryland Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Director Tom O’Connell. “These regulations are simply prudent measures to protect and aid in the restoration of this environmentally and culturally important shellfish.” Read more..Monday, January 4th, 2010 Posted in Assorted Outdoors, Waterfowl Hunting News | No Comments »
The Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) are investigating a hunting mishap involving Mallory R. Warner, 58 of Flintstone, Md. Officers were dispatched to the Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin, Md. on December 30 to investigate a self-inflicted gunshot wound suffered by Warner while duck hunting. Officers learned that the incident occurred the previous day at the E.A. Vaughn Wildlife Management Area. Warner told investigators he had leaned his shotgun against some brush in order to retrieve a duck when the gun fell over and fired, causing shot pellets to strike his left elbow. Dozens of outstanding white-tailed deer taken during New Jersey's 2008-09 hunting seasons will be available for viewing at the upcoming Garden State Outdoor Sportsmen's Show and Deer Classic. This years show will be held from January 14 - 17 at Raritan Center in Edison. This year's top entries will be recognized at the Deer Classic Awards Program on Sunday, January 17 at 2:30 p.m. The Division of Fish and Wildlife will have a large display area at the show, where hunting and fishing licenses will be available for purchase and visitors will have the opportunity to speak with biologists representing different areas of expertise. The new year is a good time to start anew. This is certainly true for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) as it begins an era of new leadership in 2010. Ken Haddad, FWC’s executive director since 2002, retired in December after a proud career with the agency. When he became executive director, the agency was in a state of flux as a result of a constitutional amendment, combining the old Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission, the Marine Fisheries Commission and parts of the Department of Environmental Protection into the new FWC. He said he wanted “to see FWC no less than the premier fish and wildlife agency in the country – a progressive and cutting-edge resource management, science and enforcement agency.” Read more..
