Next Evening Razor Clam Dig Tentatively Set To Begin Jan. 27

After a stormy New Year’s opener, razor clam diggers will get another chance to hit the beach for a five-day opening scheduled to begin Jan. 27 if marine toxin tests show the clams are safe to eat. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) also announced tentative plans for a razor-clam dig in late February, pending the results of another round of marine toxin tests. For the dig planned this month, Long Beach and Twin Harbors are tentatively scheduled to open on evening tides Jan. 27-31, with digs also planned at Copalis and Mocrocks beaches Jan. 29-31. In addition, the National Park Service has scheduled a two-day dig Jan. 30-31 at Olympic National Park’s Kalaloch beach to coincide with those at the other beaches. Read more..

Comments Sought On Proposed Fishing Rule Changes

The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish is accepting comments until Jan. 20 on several proposed changes to the state's fishing rules, including allowing anglers to take one tiger muskie, and reducing the bag limit of striped bass at Elephant Butte Lake from three to two. Public comments will be used to determine proposals submitted to the State Game Commission. Proposals can be reviewed and comments submitted on the Department Web site, www.wildlife.state.nm.us. New Jersey to Implement Spring Snow Goose Conservation Order

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Fish and Wildlife plans to implement a Conservation Order (CO) for light geese. This will be the second consecutive year that a CO has been authorized in New Jersey. In New Jersey the CO timeframe is February 16 through April 10, 2010. Under the CO, light geese can be taken with no bag limits outside of the traditional hunting period, while also allowing the use of electronic calls and shotguns loaded with up to seven shells. A Conservation Order is a special management action authorized by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act that is needed to control certain wildlife populations when traditional management programs are unsuccessful in preventing overabundance of that population. Galápagos Petrel and Heinroth’s Shearwater Proposed For ESAP

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service published in the Federal Register a final rule to list the Galapagos petrel (Pterodroma phaeopygia) previously referred to as (Pterodroma phaeopygia phaeopygia); and the Heinroth’s shearwater (Puffinus heinrothi) under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended (Act). This rule implements the Federal protections provided by the Act for these two foreign seabird species. Primary factors found to cause population declines in both species include predation by introduced rats, cats, pigs, and dogs and non-native invasive plants. Read more..
