Three areas that are popular places to pursue bears with dogs should be quieter this summer. On Jan. 6, the Utah Wildlife Board approved the following bear pursuit changes on the Book Cliffs, San Juan and La Sal units in eastern Utah: * The number of permits offered to pursue bears with dogs will be limited this summer. South Dakota State Parks Enjoy Record Year in 2009

Despite a tough economy and an increase in the park entrance fees, South Dakota State Parks experienced their busiest year on record. Across the state, visitation was up 7 percent from 2008 and camping numbers were up 10 percent. Many state recreation areas along the Missouri River and adjacent to reservoirs in western South Dakota have been impacted by the recovering water levels. “The state’s Missouri River and western campgrounds saw the greatest gains, largely due to optimum reservoir levels and good fishing,” said state park director Doug Hofer. “The parks on Lakes Oahe, Sharpe and Francis Case have been filling to capacity, boosting their camping usage 20 percent from 2008.” Read more..

Brant Numbers Strong Enough For Skagit Hunt

Brant goose numbers in Skagit County are high enough to allow an eight-day hunt later this month, according to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). Brant hunting is scheduled Jan. 16, 17, 20, 23, 24, 27, 30 and 31 with a bag limit of two geese per day. The hunting season was adopted after 6,002 brant were counted Thursday during an aerial survey of Fidalgo, Padilla and Samish bays, said Don Kraege, waterfowl section manager for WDFW. At least 6,000 brant must be counted in Skagit County before hunting is allowed. Read more..

NRP Charges Watermen With Oyster Harvesting Violations

Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) has been investigating several Oyster violations as a result of increased enforcement efforts aimed at protecting Maryland’s native Chesapeake Bay oyster stock. The investigations resulted in the following charges: On January 7, 2010 NRP charged a Dorchester County seafood dealer with possession of undersize oysters. NRP inspected a seafood truck in Wingate Marina and a random sample of the cargo revealed 9 percent undersize oysters. Adrien Leo Hansen, 74, of Cambridge, Md. was charged with possession of undersize oysters. Hansen is the owner of Hansen Seafood and was buying oysters from the commercial waterman. He was fined $155 and is set to appear February 17 in Maryland District Court in Cambridge. Read more..
