The NRA Foundation's Friends of NRA program announced it has raised over $41 million during the 2009 banquet season. These monies produced over $18 million net dollars for local and national grant purposes. Both of these accomplishments are records for Friends of NRA. On November 13, the Colorado State Friends of NRA banquet raised approximately $105,000 in net income, which helped push the program over the $18 million mark. Eight other banquets this year had a net income of over $100,000, with the leader being Pennsylvania's First Friends of NRA committee, who raised $170,000. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has added a two-day "GO-Get Outdoors" snowshoe making class at Sleepy Hollow State Park on Friday, Jan. 22, from 5 to 9 p.m., and Saturday, Jan. 23, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., as part of its winter season schedule. The class will be held at the Sleepy Hollow State Park Headquarters, located at 7835 East Price Rd. in Laingsburg (Exit 91 off US-127, 20 miles north of Lansing). Participants will learn how to weave one of two traditional wooden snowshoe designs. Clyde Risdon, owner of Risdon Rigs, who designs and builds premier quality dogsled equipment and custom snowshoes, will be the instructor. The 2010 Florida Artificial Reef Summit will be held Jan. 21-23 next in Cocoa Beach. Florida Sea Grant, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Extension Service are co-organizing this important event, which occurs every three to five years and is intended to bring together stakeholders involved with artificial reef development, management and monitoring in Florida. This will be the eighth in a series of statewide conferences on artificial reefs and will encompass artificial reef legislation, technology and monitoring. Previous conferences were held in Daytona Beach (1979), Miami (1987), Tallahassee (1990 and 1993), Palm Beach (1998), Fort Lauderdale (2001) and Sarasota (2004). Department of Natural Resources wildlife officials remind hunters that applications for spring turkey hunting licenses are on sale through Feb 1. Hunters may apply at any authorized license dealer or online using the state's E-License system at www.michigan.gov/dnr. The 2010 season runs from April 19 through May 31 with hunts lasting from seven to 42 days, depending on the hunt unit. A total of 113,890 licenses are available, including 48,890 general licenses and 65,000 private-land licenses. "Hunters looking for the greatest flexibility should consider Hunt No. 234, which includes all open areas of the state except the public lands of southern Michigan," said DNR upland game bird specialist Al Stewart.
