California Sportsmen Again Face Raid on Wildlife Funds

With California facing a $21 billion budget deficit, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is again proposing to divert millions of dollars in funding from hunting and fishing programs for non game uses – a move which would likely result in significantly less hunting and fishing opportunities for California sportsmen. The proposal from Gov. Schwarzenegger was made public with the release of the FY 2010/2011 state budget plan. However, no specific details were provided as to where the cuts would be made. As with most states, wildlife management and conservation funding in California is largely paid for by sportsmen through their hunting and fishing license and related stamp and tag fees rather than through general tax revenues. Hunters For The Hungry Out Of Money To Process Deer

During the last two weeks of the eastern deer season a most unfortunate circumstance occurred—Hunters for the Hungry informed its more than 70 meat processors not to accept any more donations of deer from hunters through January 2. The program had depleted its processing funds. The December 24-January 2 shutdown came the final week of the busy east of the Blue Ridge deer season when vacationing hunters and liberal game regulations likely would have meant donations of another 1,500 deer to feed the needy. Laura Newell-Furniss, the program director, said the decision was made "with a heavy heart." Micah Hanson Wins Minnesota Turkey Stamp Design Contest

A picture of a tom turkey strutting through the woods to attract a nearby hen, painted by Micah Hanson of Dakota, will be featured on Minnesota’s 2011 Wild Turkey Stamp. His design was chosen from among 13 entries in a contest sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). This is the first turkey stamp win for Hanson. Eight entries advanced to the second stage of judging, from which five finalists were selected during the contest conducted Thursday, Jan. 7, at DNR Headquarters in St. Paul. The second place finalist was Jim Caturia Jr. of Cannon Falls. Laurence Hulls of Avon took third. Read more..
