Registration is now open for the 2010 Winter Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (B.O.W.) workshop, a one-day program for women to learn outdoor skills for winter activities. The 2010 Winter B.O.W. workshop will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2010 (snow date Sunday, February 21), at the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department’s Owl Brook Hunter Education Center in Holderness, N.H. The workshop costs $55, which includes a box lunch. Participants must be at least 18 years old. B.O.W. is co-sponsored by N.H. Fish and Game and the New Hampshire Wildlife Federation. Participants choose a single activity for the day. They can learn how to ice-fish, explore winter outdoor survival skills, try snowshoeing and tracking, snowmobiling or ’Shoe and Shoot (combines snowshoeing and target shooting). The recreational and commercial harvest of shallow-water groupers (including gag, black grouper, red grouper, scamp, red hind, rock hind, coney, graysby, yellowfin grouper, yellowmouth grouper, and tiger grouper) will close from Jan. 19 through April 30 in all Atlantic Ocean and Monroe County state waters (inside 3 nautical miles from shore). This closure coincides with a shallow-water grouper closure in effect in Atlantic federal waters adjacent to Florida waters (beyond 3 nautical miles from shore). The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the Attorney General’s Office and the District Court of Maryland will launch a pilot program on January 15 under which the court in Anne Arundel County will set aside one day each month to try only cases dealing with natural resources violations. "We cannot let the crimes of a select few hinder our efforts to protect the natural and living resources that belong to all Marylanders," said DNR Secretary John Griffin. "By scheduling all natural resources cases on one day, we are giving everyone involved an opportunity to focus on the impact and severity of these crimes." The Department of Natural Resources today announced that communities interested in applying for grants through the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) to support outdoor recreation development have until April 1, 2010 to submit their applications. The LWCF is a federal program, administered by the National Park Service (NPS) and managed by the Department of Natural Resources in Michigan. The program provides matching grants to local units of government for developing public outdoor recreation facilities, such as trails, fishing piers and playgrounds. This assistance is directed at creating and improving outdoor recreational opportunities and to create and maintain a nationwide legacy of high quality recreation areas and facilities and to stimulate non-federal investments in the protection and maintenance of recreation resources across the United States.
