GFP Commission Proposes Increase in Special Buck Licenses

A proposal before the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission would increase the number of Special Buck licenses available for the 2010 firearm deer season. The proposal would increase East River resident licenses from 400 to 500, the same number currently available for West River resident and nonresident seasons There is no East River Special Buck nonresident season. The Special Buck licenses are only good on private land. The Commission also proposed adopting new federal regulations from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service regarding the practice of falconry. By 2014, all states must comply with federal regulations and have a state falconry program approved. Montana State Parks Host Record Two Million Visits In 2009

Montana’s 54 state parks reported a record number of visits—2 million—last year. "Eighty-three percent of those visits were by Montanans," said Chas Van Genderen, State Parks Administrator. “Overall visit numbers have grown five of the past six years. Only 2008, with its high gas prices, showed a slight decrease.” Thirteen parks hosted more visits than ever before—including Makoshika with its unique badlands scenery, Flathead Lake’s Wild Horse Island, and Tongue River Reservoir in the southeastern corner of the state. Van Genderen said water-based parks were most popular, with more than a million visits--a 15 percent increase over 2008. Parks along Flathead Lake and Spring Meadow Lake State Park near Helena were among the water-based parks with record-breaking seasons. Read more..

Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center Programs

The Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center in Cadillac has announced its winter and spring schedule of programs. The center is located next to Mitchell State Park on M-115 in Cadillac, and is one of 10 Department of Natural Resources visitor centers around the state. There is no fee for the programs. Please note that some of the program dates have changed from the schedule previously announced on Jan. 6. The programs include: Jan. 16, Dog Sled Rides. Offered from noon to 1:30 p.m. and 2 to 3 p.m., this program is for children only. Parents must sign their children up at the center during the event. Read more..

Winter Festival at Burr Pond State Park

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection's (DEP) No Child Left InsideSM initiative continues this winter with the fourth annual "Winter Festival" at Burr Pond State Park, Torrington. The Winter Festival will take place Saturday, February 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a full range of winter outdoor activities for the whole family. The Festival is FREE and there is no registration or sign-up. Everyone is welcome to attend. Last year’s "Winter Festival" at Black Rock State Park in Watertown drew more than 800 adults and children.
