During the Jan. 1-10 extended whitetail firearms deer season, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP), in partnership with Claythorne Lodge, K&K Outfitters, and John’s Sporting Goods, provided youth deer hunts for 12 young hunters — six on each of the two days — and accompanying adults. On Saturday, Jan. 2, and Saturday, Jan. 9, the hunters waited in blinds on private land overlooking areas that consistently attract good numbers of deer. Pre-hunt activities included a pizza lunch provided by John’s Sports Center, safety instruction, and sighting in rifles before the hunts began at 1 p.m. each day. Commercial fishing for non-sandbar large coastal sharks as defined by Louisiana rule (L.A.C. 76:VII.357) will open in Louisiana waters at 12:01 a.m., Feb. 4, 2010. The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) will also open the federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico at this time. The commercial seasons in Louisiana state waters will close at 12:01 a.m., April 1, 2010, per existing seasonal rules, unless a season closes in adjacent federal waters or is projected to close before that date, and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Secretary is requested by NOAA Fisheries to take action to enact consistent seasonal regulations. The commercial seasons will remain open in federal waters until 80 percent of the federal quota for a given fishery has been harvested in the Gulf of Mexico. A severely injured female Louisiana black bear was found and reported to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) on Sunday, Jan. 10. The bear was discovered and reported by a resident on Coulee Road near Lydia in Iberia Parish. LDWF Large Carnivore Biologist Maria Davidson went to the location and found the bear in such poor condition it could no longer survive in the wild. The bear was removed from the location and taken to LDWF Headquarters for examination and evaluation. Due to the extent of its injuries and near-death condition the bear was euthanized on Tuesday, Jan. 12. The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is accepting applications for Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) Forestland Initiative at your local USDA Service Center or conservation district office. This is a special fund initiative in addition to the regular EQIP sign-up for an identified focus area. Conservation practices such as forest stand improvement, tree planting and fencing to exclude livestock from woodlands are available. Landowners may apply for the Environmental Quality Incentives Program at any time. However, applications received by Jan. 29 will be considered for the current federal fiscal year. Applications received after Jan. 29 will be held until the next evaluation period. Read more..
