Coyotes are found in every county in Georgia and their presence has hunters and wildlife biologists alike wondering how these predators are affecting white-tailed deer populations. “Since the 1960’s, Georgia’s deer population has risen from scarcity to areas of local overabundance through restocking efforts and science-based management,” says Charlie Killmaster, State Deer Project Coordinator. “The population has since declined to a healthy level; however, a better understanding of the role of coyotes in deer management is needed.” Although several studies have investigated predation impacts on the white-tailed deer population, few have been done in the Southeast and coyote predation on fawns likely varies regionally and locally. The Sandhill Outdoor Skills Center and Timber Wolf Information Network are co-sponsoring a Timber Wolf Ecology Clinic where biologists and volunteers will provide instruction on aspects of wolf ecology, including status, population biology and field study techniques. The course will run Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 20-21 from 9 a.m. Saturday to noon Sunday. Saturday afternoon will be spent outdoors exploring wolf habitat. Registration is limited to 25 people ages 12 and up on a first-come, first-served basis. Register by mailing in $75 per person by Feb. 4. This fee includes instructional fees, transportation on Saturday afternoon, Saturday supper and Sunday lunch, and for dorm use. Two U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologists died in the crash of their small aircraft on January 17th in western Oregon. Pilot-biologist Vernon Ray (Ray) Bentley, 52, from Blodgett, Oregon, and David Sherwood (Dave) Pitkin, 49, from Bandon, Oregon, died when their plane went down west of Philomath, Oregon. The two were returning from Newport, Oregon, after a day spent flying over estuaries along the Oregon coast, counting ducks, geese and swans for the Service’s annual mid-winter waterfowl survey. Pitkin was a contract employee and had previously been a biologist with the Service’s National Wildlife Refuge System for 15 years at the Oregon Coast NWR Complex. Entries in this year's first Super Hunt and Super Hunt Combo drawing must be received at Fish and Game headquarters by May 31 with the drawing set for June 15. Super Hunt is a fundraising drawing for 40 big game tags. The tags are handed out to winners in two drawings. Entries are drawn for elk, deer, pronghorn and moose tags. Winners can participate in any open hunt in the state for deer, elk, pronghorn or moose. That includes general hunts and controlled hunts. The first drawing in June will be for eight elk, eight deer, and eight pronghorn hunts as well as one moose hunt; one "Super Hunt Combo" entry also will be drawn that will entitle the winner to hunt for one each elk, deer, pronghorn, and moose.
