Warmer temperatures and no substantial snowfall in the last week has caused snow conditions to begin to deteriorate, especially in areas of southern Wisconsin. Snow depths range from a low of less than half a foot in some areas to more than 18 inches in the Lake Superior snow belt along the northern tier of counties. More than a dozen counties have now closed snowmobile trails. Warm weather and some rain are forecast for southern Wisconsin this weekend, so more trails may be closed. Remember, snowmobile trails are closed on a local level based on conditions. Check the Snow Conditions Report on the Department of Tourism Web page or contact the county snowmobile coordinator for the current status of snowmobile trails. State fish and wildlife officers and a federal wildlife-control agent today trapped and euthanized a coyote they believe to be the animal that has been threatening people in Seattle’s Discovery Park and nearby Magnolia neighborhood. A wildlife-control agent with the U. S. Department of Agriculture, working under a contract with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) and in cooperation with the Seattle Police Department, euthanized the 40-pound, male coyote after capturing the animal in a live trap early this morning. Tissue samples from the animal will be tested for rabies, according to Capt. Bill Hebner, who heads WDFW’s enforcement program for the northern Puget Sound region. The Department of Natural Resources and Environment will host two Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) winter workshops: an archery workshop in February and a discovery weekend in March, both designed especially for women who want to learn new skills, enjoy the outdoors and have fun doing it. On Tuesday, Feb. 23, would-be archers can learn the basics at the “Beyond BOW Archery Workshop” at the Demmer Shooting Center, 3365 E. Jolly Rd. in Lansing. The workshop will run 6 to 9 p.m. and cover safety measures, proper shooting form and technique; overviews of recurve, compound and crossbows; and maintenance and selection of equipment. A recently released report commissioned by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), titled “Florida Boating Access Facilities Inventory and Economic Study,” revealed the importance of boating to Florida’s economy. However, as good as boating is for the economy, the report indicated there is a need to address critical boating infrastructure now to continue to adequately accommodate boating activities in the future. The report showed that spending related to recreational boating trips supports 97,000 jobs in Florida, with recreational boater expenditures totaling $8.5 billion. This represents about 50 percent of the total jobs and spending associated with Florida’s diverse marine industry. Read more..
