Oakwood Lake State Park will host the Kool Kids’ Klassic Fishing Derby and the Groundhog Day Cross-Country Ski Tour on Jan. 30 and 31, respectively. Children younger than 14 are invited to take part in the Kool Kids’ Klassic Ice Fishing Derby. Registration for the derby is $2 and will take place at the park shop at 11 a.m. CST. The first 150 entries will receive free fishing poles made by park staff. Bait is furnished and event staff will drill holes in the ice as needed. Fishing will take place in designated areas from noon to 2 p.m., with weigh-in to follow. Winners will be announced at a 3 p.m. awards ceremony. Watching wildlife is such big business in Florida that Gov. Charlie Crist proclaimed Jan. 25-31 Florida Birding & Wildlife Watching and Natural Resource Education Week. More people travel to Florida each year to view wildlife than to any other state, according to research by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). That spells big business for our state, with wildlife viewing generating more than $3 billion and supporting 19,000 retail jobs in Florida annually. In addition, one in every six Florida residents participates in some form of wildlife-viewing activity, whether at home, in parks or preserves, or along the state’s scenic waterways. Late yesterday afternoon, the Arizona Game and Fish Department received from the news media a redacted copy of the U.S. Department of Interior Inspector General (IG) report about events related to the jaguar known as Macho B. News stories about the report have appeared in various media outlets. The Department would note that the document represents a redacted and therefore incomplete version that gives no useful indication of what additional clarity or context the redacted material might add to the public’s understanding of it. A Mason County man recently pled guilty to illegally taking/killing a trumpeter swan this spring. James Craig Cameron, 20, admitted to shooting the swan in late April 2009 in Custer Township. Cameron was ordered to pay $450 in fines and court costs, a $10 conservation fee and to reimburse the State of Michigan $1,500 for the swan. In addition, he will lose his hunting privileges for three years. Cameron was arrested at his family cabin in Mason County by Department of Natural Resources and Environment Conservation Officer Brian Brosky after a nearly two-month investigation following the discovery of the dead swan by a Custer resident.
