The Pisgah Fly Masters, a fly fishing tournament that benefits wildlife education and programs about trout fishing, returns for a third year with the addition of a professional category. On March 20, entrants will test their casting skills at the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education, with top finishers advancing to a catch-and-release fishing competition on March 21 along a private stretch of the Davidson River. The new category for professionals is for anyone who has worked in the fly fishing industry within the past 10 years or is a member of a state or national fly fishing team. Whether you are an experienced fly-fisher, a rank beginner or someone just wanting to find out more about "fooling fish with feathers," you need to be at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) in Athens on March 13. The annual Fly Fish Texas event will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and is designed to teach everything from tying a fly to catching a fish in one day. A limited number of spaces are still available in the Department of Environmental Management's Family Ice Fishing Training workshop to be held on Saturday, January 30. Sponsored by DEM's Aquatic Resource Education Program, the workshop will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at the Carolina Trout Hatchery in Carolina. Workshop participants will learn about the equipment needed to have a successful ice fishing day, the types of bait and lures used for ice fishing, and view a demonstration on how to use an auger and set up a fishing rig. The program will also review ice and cold-weather safety procedures and what to do in case of an emergency. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced the opening of the application period for its two cooperative programs to enhance opportunities for pheasant hunting in New York State - The Day-Old Pheasant Chick Program and the Young Pheasant Release Program. The programs provide pheasant hunting opportunities through a partnership amongst DEC, sportsmen and sportswomen, 4-H youth, and landowners who are interested in rearing and releasing pheasants. In 2009, DEC distributed 50,293 day-old pheasant chicks and 13,880 young pheasants to qualified applicants through the two programs. Applications must be filed with a DEC regional wildlife manager by March 15, 2010. Read more..
