The NRA's Law Enforcement Division celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. To commemorate the occasion, special items will be issued and sold throughout the year, such as a badge, challenge coin and pin. New to this list is a unique Model 10 Smith & Wesson service revolver. Although the NRA's involvement with law enforcement dates back to the 1920's, the division, as we know it today, was formed as a department in 1960 and has grown into its own division. First-time youth turkey hunters ages 12 to 17 have the chance to go afield this spring and learn from an experienced National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) volunteer. Applications, maps and general information for the wild turkey hunt are available online. Application deadline is midnight on Monday, Feb. 15. Participants will be selected through a random lottery. “Mentored hunts are an excellent opportunity to match a youth and their parent or guardian with an expert to learn a life-long outdoors hunting skill,” said Mike Kurre, mentoring program coordinator for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). “Not only do these hunts provide an opportunity for mentors to pass their turkey hunting knowledge on, it is a great chance for quality time in the outdoors.” Read more..

It happened amid bitter cold Jan. 9. Volunteers for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) Ridge Rangers program logged their 30,000th hour of service helping preserve the endangered ecosystem of the Lake Wales Ridge – the spine of central Florida. Because of the teamwork, Jim Reed, Ridge Rangers volunteer coordinator, could only approximate when the 30,000th-man-hour goal was reached. “It was in the morning, around the time two volunteers dragged a truck bed out of bear habitat and another one took a GPS reading of a gopher tortoise burrow,” Reed said. The 29 volunteers worked on several habitat-enhancement activities throughout the morning on the Flamingo Villas tract of Lake Wales Ridge National Wildlife Refuge. Read more..

Having dedicated our community to the health of this waterway, which will contribute to the health of the Chesapeake Bay, we stand ready to work with Governor Martin O’Malley, DNR and the Department of the Environment in this important undertaking.” Read more..
