The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources today said the recent finding by a Cornell University research team of traces of Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia virus (VHS) in fish inhabiting Lake Superior would not lead to any immediate regulation changes for anglers or boaters. Cornell University reported in a press release today that they had found trace amounts of VHS virus in organ samples taken from a small number of healthy fish in four sites in Lake Superior. Class dates have been set for upcoming boating safety courses in Lincoln, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. The classes are scheduled for Feb. 27, April 18, May 8, May 23, June 7 and 9, June 28 and 30, and July 11. They will be held at the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Northeast Commercial Complex, 4817 N. 56th St. Ste. 1. Contact the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary at (402) 540-3113. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is developing plans to stock flathead catfish and channel catfish in the Rock River later this year as part of a continuing effort to speed the recovery of the river’s fishery in the aftermath of a June 2009 fish kill. Tens of thousands of sport fish were lost in the Rock River fish kill event first reported on June 20-21, 2009. At that time, dead fish were discovered in the Rock River in an area from two miles north of Grand Detour to 50 miles downstream at Prophetstown. The IDNR stocked the river with smallmouth bass and northern pike last summer and channel catfish last fall in the aftermath of the fish kill. The Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) is looking for landowners in SE Colorado to lease access for the 2010 hunting seasons. The DOW's Big Game Access Program (BGAP) will continue for a fourth year. This fourth year will provide ongoing private lands access while allowing the DOW time to complete the analysis of the first three years of the pilot program (2007-2009). The program analysis will be conducted for the first three years, including an annual evaluation to determine the ability to sustain the program and potential to expand. The evaluation will be based on landowner satisfaction, sportsmen satisfaction, game harvest by species, economic viability, and overall participation in and success of the program. Read more..
