Wolf Lake Fish Hatchery in Van Buren County is hosting two events in February designed especially for those who want to learn about birds or try snowshoeing. The Winter Bird Walk and Great Backyard Bird Count will take place on Saturday, Feb. 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Join the Audubon Society of Kalamazoo to discover the many birds that stay in Michigan throughout the winter. Participants will take part in the Great Backyard Bird Count by keeping track of what they see and submitting the information to a national database. A brief presentation will begin in the auditorium before heading outside on the trails. Bring binoculars and field guides if you have them; the visitor center will have some on hand for those without. Lake Brittle continues to be one of the best places in the northern Virginia piedmont to catch a walleye. Anglers targeting walleye report good success at this small impoundment with most fish caught in the two to three pound range and the occasional fish up to five pounds. Fisheries sampling continues to document good survival of stocked walleye fingerlings and a strong population of walleye up to age five reside in Lake Brittle. Recent data from the ongoing tagging study has shown that angler catch and harvest rates for walleye are higher than previously thought and as a result an 18-inch minimum size limit was put into effect during 2009. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission advises anglers that regulations prohibit the recreational harvest of all shallow-water groupers (gag, black, red, yellowfin, scamp, yellowmouth, rock hind and red hind) from Feb. 1 through March 31 in all Gulf of Mexico waters off Florida, except in all waters of Monroe County. Closing the recreational harvest of all Gulf shallow-water grouper species for two months each year during the spawning season reduces overfishing of Gulf gag grouper. It does this by limiting the unintended catch and possible mortality of gag grouper to help it rebuild its populations and achieve larger annual harvests in the future for this important species. Anglers are ice fishing however caution needs to be used. Avoid those areas near pressure cracks and where creeks or streams flow into a lake. Shoreline ice may not be safe. Water levels were up in some rivers after the rain and snow melt. Southeast Lower Peninsula Lake Erie - Did not have much to report as the ice was no longer safe in Brest Bay or around the Banana Dike. Colder temperatures this week will help but it is going to take some time to shore the ice back up. Those fishing the channel in the Metro Park Marina were taking a few perch and bluegills.
