Private Land The Key To Forest Health

Missouri forests grew three times faster than the rate of harvest over the past 30 years. However, that great news disguises a less encouraging fact. Much of the Show-Me State’s forest is in the same condition a garden would be if you simply threw seeds on the ground in the spring and came back in the fall hoping to harvest crops. Recent surveys show that Missouri’s privately owned forests are growing at an annual rate of approximately 127.1 board-feet per acre, while it is being harvested at a rate of about 32.5 board feet per acre. Statewide, Missouri’s forest area has increased by nearly 2 million acres in the past 30 years. NRA Clubs & Associations will hold their first NRA Club University of 2010 on March 13 at the SpringHill Suites by Marriott Orlando International Airport. $1.6 Billion Requested for U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 2011 Budget

The President's FY 2011 budget request of $1.6 billion for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will focus funding on the agency's highest priority conservation initiatives, while containing costs through management efficiencies and other savings to address government fiscal realities. Among the top strategic investments are increases of $18.8 million for Climate Change Adaptation and $4 million for work to review planned renewable energy development to ensure they do not place threatened or endangered species at risk, as well as an additional $15.8 million for ecosystem restoration and $20 million for Federal land acquisition. Michigan Winter Free Fishing Weekend

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment reminds everyone that Winter Free Fishing Weekend is scheduled for Feb 13-14. On that weekend, everyone - residents and non-residents alike - can fish without a license, though all other fishing regulations apply. Michigan has been celebrating Winter Free Fishing Weekend annually since 2000 as a way to promote natural resources awareness. With more than 3,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, 36,000 miles of river and 11,000 inland lakes, Michigan and fishing are a natural match. “Fishing is a great way to connect with our natural resources,” said DNRE Director Rebecca Humphries. “It’s a perfect way for families to spend time together while celebrating the bounty of Michigan’s wonderfully diverse outdoor heritage.” Read more..
