The Michigan Department of Natural Resources & Environment has added a two-day “GO-Get Outdoors” snowshoe making class at Proud Lake Recreation Area on Friday, Feb. 26, from 5 to 9 p.m., and Saturday, Feb. 27, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., as part of its winter season schedule. The class will be held at the Proud Lake Recreation area, in the River Hawk Conference Center, located at 3500 Wixom Rd. in Commerce Township. There will be a sign directing participants to the conference center. Participants will learn how to weave one of two traditional wooden snowshoe designs. Clyde Risdon, owner of Risdon Rigs (www.risdonrigs.com), who designs and builds premier quality dogsled equipment and custom snowshoes, will be the instructor. The application period for spring turkey controlled hunts runs through March 1. Spring turkey seasons start April 15 - some controlled hunts open later. Leftover tags for spring turkey controlled hunts go on sale April 1. The commissioners also removed the waiting period to use a second turkey tag. A second turkey tag now may be used after the general tag has been used, on the second day of the turkey season. The daily bag limit remains one bearded turkey per day in the spring and one turkey of either sex per day in the fall. The Idaho Fish and Game Commission, during the annual meeting Thursday, January 28, changed the season opening and limit on chukar and gray partridge, and changed turkey rules. The season for chukar and gray partridge will open statewide on October 1, with a daily limit of six birds and 12 in possession. The commissioners also changed pheasant shooting hours on opening day to one-half hour before sunrise statewide - except at C.J. Strike, Fort Boise, Montour and Payette River wildlife management areas, where it will open at 10 a.m., including youth hunts. DNREC’s Division of Fish & Wildlife has just completed a draft version of Delaware’s Deer Management Plan, the first plan ever produced for formally addressing the future of a deer herd that has grown into a state success story of wildlife restoration. Before the plan is officially completed, the Division of Fish & Wildlife is soliciting feedback from anyone with interest in and concern about how deer are managed in Delaware. “Whether you are a farmer, hunter, outdoor recreationalist, or someone who might have hit a deer with your car, you probably have concerns about how deer are managed in Delaware,” said Joe Rogerson, F&W deer and furbearer biologist. “We want your input on how you feel the state’s white-tailed deer population can be managed.
