Bobwhite Quail Habitat Recover Program Agreement

Today, the Georgia Association of Conservation District Supervisors (GACDS) joined with 13 other conservation organizations of the Georgia Bobwhite Technical Team, by signing a Memorandum of Agreement committing to the recovery of bobwhite quail and other early successional habitat dependent species, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division (WRD). More than four million acres of habitat must be enhanced across Georgia’s landscape to achieve Northern Bobwhite Conservation Initiative (NBCI) recovery goals. “Faced with this challenge, I am thrilled that the Wildlife Resources Division formed the Technical Team to promote a collaborative effort directed at implementing NBCI,” said WRD Director Dan Forster. “I commend GACDS along with the other conservation partners that signed this Memorandum of Agreement to formalize collaborative efforts and send a message that Georgia is ... National Archery in the Schools Georgia State Tournament

More than 400 students throughout the state will compete Feb. 12 in the 4th annual National Archery in the Schools Georgia State Tournament. The state’s top archers from 24 elementary, middle and high schools will convene in Perry for the tournament. The state tournament is coordinated by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division and is open to all Georgia schools enrolled in the National Archery in the Schools program (NASP). A total of 457 students in grades 4-12 have registered for the event. Participation in the shoot has more than quadrupled since the first year. Read more..

Moose Population Decline Continues In Northeastern Minnesota

According to results of an aerial survey released by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the moose population in northeastern Minnesota continues to decline. Survey results revealed lower moose numbers and the proportion of cows accompanied by calves continued a 13-year decline and dropping to a record low of 28 calves per 100 cows. “These indices along with results from research using radio-collared moose all indicate that the population has been declining in recent years,” said Dr. Mark Lenarz, DNR forest wildlife group leader. DNR Seeks Watercraft Inspector Applicants

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking watercraft inspector interns for the upcoming boating season. Inspectors are stationed at public accesses on lakes and rivers infested with invasive species such as Eurasian watermilfoil and zebra mussels. “We’re looking for enthusiastic young adults interested in doing important environmental conservation work,” said Heidi Wolf, DNR watercraft inspection program coordinator. Watercraft inspectors inform and educate the public about aquatic invasive species and the threat they pose to Minnesota waters. Read more..
