Arizonans may have heard a story on National Public Radio on Feb. 10 that includes some factual errors regarding a recent U.S. Department of the Interior Inspector General (IG) report about the capture and handling of the jaguar known as Macho B. “If you listened to this morning’s NPR report and you think you know the story of Macho B, you’ve been misled,” said Gary Hovatter, deputy director of the Arizona Game and Fish Department. A snow storm earlier this week dropped anywhere from 2 to 4 inches in northern and central Wisconsin, to nearly a foot of snow in the far southeast. Snow cover now ranges from 4 to 6 inches in central Wisconsin and Door County, to a foot in the southeast, to 18 to 20 inches in the north. The new snow allowed most counties to reopen snowmobile trails, with conditions ranging from good to excellent in the southeast and north, to fair to poor in central Wisconsin on the Department of Tourism’s Snow Conditions Report. Almost all state parks and forests are reporting good to excellent conditions for cross-country skiing, with several reporting the best conditions of the year. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is considering allowing the use of crossbows by hunters during archery season. The FWC would like to hear from Florida’s hunters regarding their views on this rule proposal. Hunters are encouraged to go to MyFWC.com/Deer for a detailed summary of the proposed changes and, until March 31, provide online comments and constructive feedback. Currently, only compound bows, longbows and recurve bows may be used during the archery season, unless a hunter qualifies for and has obtained a disabled crossbow permit. DNRE Asks for Help From Public to Detect Presence of Wolves in the Lower Peninsula The Department of Natural Resources and Environment today announced it will conduct a survey in the northern Lower Peninsula Feb. 16 through March 12 to detect the presence of gray wolves in this area of the state. Survey teams will be searching areas where the public reports observing a wolf or wolf tracks during the survey period. Priority will be placed on the most recent reports and reports with potential wolf evidence. Read more..
