Decline of Unimak Caribou Concerns State Wildlife Managers

Faced with the imminent and perhaps irreversible decline of caribou on Unimak Island, the Department of Fish and Game has developed a plan to restore this once valuable subsistence resource. The plan would include selective harvest of wolves on caribou calving grounds and trans-locating bull caribou to supplement the herd. The Alaska Board of Game was recently briefed on the situation by Lem Butler, area management biologist from King Salmon. The plan will be considered for implementation by the Board at its March meeting in Fairbanks. The Department has met with and discussed the proposed action with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, which administers most of the land area of Unimak Island as part of the refuge system in Alaska. Funding for Arctic–Yukon–Kuskokwim Salmon Research

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced $1.1 million in funding opportunities for priority salmon research, monitoring, and management projects in the Arctic, Yukon, and Kuskokwim region. The funding comes from Alaska’s Pacific Coastal Salmon Recovery Funds that are administered by the Department of Fish and Game as the Alaska Sustainable Salmon Fund. The first call for proposals will open on February 12 and will offer approximately $600,000 for salmon stock assessment and management projects with an emphasis on obtaining reliable escapement estimates and other important information on Chinook and chum salmon stocks that have declined. More Nebraska Boater Safety Courses Available

Five boater safety home-study courses have been added to the list of available classes, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. Participants must register by the deadline to receive home-study materials, then attend a class to review and take a test. The classes are: March 27 Hastings Police Department, 317 S. Burlington, 9 a.m.-noon, register by March 13. March 27 Kearney, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission District VI office, 1617 1st Ave., 2-5 p.m., register by March 13. Read more..

Milan Army Ammunition Plant Turkey Hunt

The Milan Army Ammunition Plant will hold a public drawing for 12 turkey permits for the 2010 spring turkey hunting season. Interested persons can go to the following hunting Web site for application instructions: www.milanarsenalhunting.com and then view under Hunting Notices: 2010 Public Hunting Permits for Spring Turkey Season. The application deadline is March 8. Tennessee's 2010 statewide spring turkey hunting season runs from April 3 through May 16. Read more..
