“The Legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Grayling Area” will be the topic of a presentation at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 7, at the Hartwick Pines Logging Museum in Grayling. Department of Natural Resources and Environment historian Rob Burg will present the program that highlights the work the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) did in Grayling, Gaylord, Houghton Lake, Kalkaska, Mio and Roscommon. The CCC planted more than 400 million trees in Michigan, fought thousands of forest fires across the country and developed some of America’s most beloved national parks. Bacterial pneumonia, which has been raising havoc with bighorn sheep herds in other Western states, has found another set of victims on Goslin Mountain in northeastern Utah. Recent surveys by Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) biologists have found most of the bighorns in the Goslin herd near the Green River in Daggett County are infected with the disease. "We've noticed a decline in the Goslin population for a couple of years, but we weren't able to identify the reason until recently," says Charlie Greenwood, regional DWR wildlife manager. Persons looking for a summer job working in the great outdoors, can apply starting today to become a state worker at one of Michigan’s state parks, visitor centers, harbors, or boating access sites. Part- and full-time employment is available, with an opportunity to work up to 1,040 hours during the summer season. Seasonal employees, or state workers, are paid a minimum of $7.65/hour. Candidates should be 18 and older and be willing to work varied shifts including weekends, evenings and holidays. Summer employees are needed at Michigan’s 98 state parks and recreation areas, nearly 700 boating access sites and 16 state harbors. The DNRE will hire more than 1,200 workers for summer jobs.
