With a month left in Idaho's first regulated wolf hunting season, half the wolf zones are closed and another is one wolf shy of the harvest limit. As of Monday, March 1, hunters have taken 162 wolves, with 58 left to reach the statewide harvest limit. Wolf harvest is nearly at the limit of 16 in the Salmon Zone where hunters have taken 15, leaving one wolf left until the season closes in that zone. Six other zones already have closed. The wolf season closed February 1 in the Middle Fork zone, January 2 in the Southern Mountains zone, December 18 in the Palouse-Hells Canyon zone, on November 17 in the Dworshak-Elk City zone, on November 9 in the McCall-Weiser zone, and on November 2 in the Upper Snake zone. Organizers of certain fishing tournaments planning events for 2011 will want to apply for a permit starting April 1, 2010. “If you plan on holding a fishing tournament in 2011, we recommend that you apply in the open period that starts April 1 and runs through June 30, 2010, to have the best chance of getting your desired dates and waters,” says Joanna Griffin, tournament coordinator for the Department of Natural Resources. All applications received during the open period will be reviewed by Aug. 1, 2010, and in the unlikely event that another tournament conflicts with an organizer’s choice of dates or waters, DNR fisheries biologists will discuss options with the tournament organizers, Griffin says. The announcement that the U.S. Department of Agriculture will offer a general Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) signup later in 2010 is good news for ducks and duck hunters, according to Delta Waterfowl Senior Vice President John Devney. “CRP is a proven, time-tested voluntary program that provides numerous benefits to our land and waters, including grass nesting cover that each year produces hundreds of thousands of ducks for duck hunters across the U.S.,” said Devney. “This is welcome news because we haven’t had a signup since 2006.” Established in 1985, CRP pays farmers and ranchers to idle environmentally sensitive lands and plant them to grass and other cover types.
