FWC Busts Black-Market Shrimp Dealer

The black-market connection to the sale of stolen shrimp in Lee County got a little smaller Thursday, thanks to an undercover bust by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) investigators. Shortly after noon, John Anthony Staniewicz Jr. (DOB 07/26/50) of 19241 San Carlos Blvd., Fort Myers Beach, was arrested by FWC law enforcement officers on a second-degree felony charge for dealing in stolen property and a second-degree misdemeanor charge of buying and selling saltwater products without a wholesale dealer’s license. Dealing in stolen property is punishable by up to 15 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Selling saltwater products without a license is punishable by up to a $500 fine and 60 days in jail. Wolf Lake Fish Hatchery Visitor Center Opens for Spring

The Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery Visitor Center, located just eight miles west of Kalamazoo, will be reopening for the spring 2010 season beginning Saturday, March 6. The 7,000 square-foot interpretive center offers visitors a fascinating look at Michigan’s fish and fisheries management programs. Hours of operation for March - May are Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sundays 12 noon to 4 p.m. The visitor center is closed on Mondays. Visitors can learn about all aspects of fisheries science through displays, multi-media programs, and interpretive materials. Learn about the habits and biology of fish, as well as the history of fishing in Michigan-from Native Americans to the present. Read more..

Wildlife Department Making Strides In Quail Habitat Restoration

Research shows that bobwhite quail numbers across the nation have been in gradual decline since the 1960s, but Oklahoma remains a great holdout for the long-celebrated upland bird. Despite its location along the western fringe of the bobwhites native range, Oklahoma offers some of the best quail hunting and habitat in the nation including large, contiguous tracts of outstanding mixed grass prairie as well as portions suitable for restoration. At its March meeting, the Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Commission heard a presentation from wildlife biologists highlighting efforts to benefit bobwhite quail and fight downward trends. DNRE Seeks Information in Clinton County Bald Eagle Poaching Case

Department of Natural Resources and Environment officials are seeking information related to a recent bald eagle poaching case in northwestern Clinton County. DNRE Conservation Officer Richard Nickols was called to investigate a dead bald eagle found on Feb. 6 in a field near the intersection of Colony and Jones roads in Lebanon Township. The bird may have been killed several days before it was found. The DNRE's Wildlife Disease Lab determined that the eagle - whose plumage indicated that it was immature - died of a gunshot wound.
