An apparently malnourished young mountain lion entered a Chaffee County residence Thursday afternoon, killing one dog and briefly trapping a mother and her two children inside the house until Chaffee County Sheriffs Deputies evacuated them. Colorado Division of Wildlife officers were able to tranquilize the lion, which appeared to be significantly underweight for its age, according to DOW Area Wildlife Manager Jim Aragon. After evaluating the lion's condition, Aragon said, a decision was made to euthanize the animal. It is highly unusual for a mountain lion to enter a building. "We will know more after we get the results of the necropsy, but this animal was not demonstrating normal behavior," Aragon said. Hunters harvested approximately 222,800 deer in the 2009 season, virtually the same number as were harvested statewide the previous season, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Pete Grannis announced today. The annual deer hunting report also showed that nearly 16,000 14- and 15-year-olds signed up for the "Junior Big-Game License". Deer Harvest The 2009 deer take included more than 120,700 antlerless deer (adult females and fawns) and just over 102,000 adult bucks. Antlerless takes grew by 3 percent from 2008 (117,232), while buck takes dropped 3.5 percent from 2008 (105,747). Totals for bow and muzzleloader seasons were on par with the past few years. On March 2, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) announced that 10 white-tailed deer from northwestern Kansas had tested positive for chronic wasting disease (CWD). These were animals taken by hunters in the 2009 hunting seasons. The agency is still awaiting the result from another deer sample that was presumed to be positive after preliminary testing at the K-State Diagnostic Veterinary Lab in Manhattan. That "presumptive positive" has been sent to the National Veterinary Services Lab in Ames, Iowa, for confirmation. The one presumptive positive deer was taken by a hunter in Decatur County, and another four deer from that county have been confirmed positive. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency will be conducting its first trapping education instructor workshop. The one-day workshop will be held Saturday, March 13 at the TWRA Region III Office in Crossville beginning at 1 p.m. (CST). The workshop is being provided at no cost, but is directed toward experienced trappers who want to become a certified instructor in the field. There are a limited number of certified trapping instructors scattered across the state and the TWRA has certified just under 200 students in the past year. Read more..
