New Jersey Takes Step Towards Bear Hunt

A recent decision by the New Jersey Fish and Game Council (FGC) moves the state closer to its first bear hunt in five years. On March 9, the FGC approved a management plan for the state’s black bear population that recommends a six-day hunt in December. The plan now moves to the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for a public comment period prior to a final decision being made by acting DEP Commissioner, Bob Martin. "We are pleased the FGC voted to recommend a hunting season as part of the management plan,” said Rob Sexton, U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance Foundation (USSAF) vice president for government affairs. “We will continue working with state officials to keep moving this badly needed plan forward.” Read more..

Those trying to fish last ice need to use extreme caution as conditions will become even more dangerous with rain and warm temperatures in the forecast. It is time to start thinking about spring fishing. Anglers are reminded that walleye season on inland waters will close on Monday March 15th however; Saginaw Bay and the Great Lakes remain open all year round. March 15th also marks the end of spearing season for northern pike and musky. Southeast Lower Peninsula Lake Erie - Has no safe ice. Boat anglers have started fishing off Bolles Harbor and in Brest Bay for walleye. A few perch were still being caught near Metro Park. No big numbers however some of the perch were good size. Utah Elk Test Positive For Chronic Wasting Disease

Samples from big game animals taken this past hunting season turned up something never seen in Utah before—an elk with chronic wasting disease. The cow elk along with five buck deer tested positive for CWD. The six animals were taken on units in Utah where CWD has been found in past years. CWD was not found in any new areas in Utah this past fall. "Chronic wasting disease is most prevalent in deer, but sometimes elk and even moose get it," says Leslie McFarlane, wildlife disease coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources. Read more..

Redbird Reef Receives Tugboat And Barges

Delaware’s Redbird Reef — the largest site of sunken vehicles and vessels in the state’s network of artificial reefs—was enhanced for recreational diving this week with the sinking of a retired 74-foot tugboat, while another reef site received as fish habitat commercial barges that will make for more bites for anglers. The Sandy Point, a towboat, went down near the Bay Tide and Crazy Horse, two retired fishing boats sunk on the Redbird Reef within the last year. “They are close enough together that a diver can probably now access all three vessels on a single dive,” said Jeffrey Tinsman, DNREC Division of Fish & Wildlife artificial reef program manager.
