White-Tailed Deer Tests Positive for CWD in Missouri

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is notifying citizens that a captive white-tailed deer in Missouri has tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). This is the first confirmed case of CWD in Missouri. Anyone bringing a cervid (deer, elk, moose, or caribou) carcass from Missouri, or the 16 other states or two Canadian provinces where CWD has been detected, must follow North Carolina processing and packaging regulations (PDF). States where CWD has been detected include Colorado, Wyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska, Montana, Wisconsin, New Mexico, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Illinois, Utah, West Virginia, New York, Kansas, Michigan, Virginia and Missouri. Outlook Fair for Texas Spring Turkey Season

Hunters should temper expectations for this spring’s turkey season after back-to-back years of dry conditions negatively impacted nesting success across much of Texas, resulting in fewer gobblers on the ground. The good news is 2007 produced a bumper crop of birds and that carryover of mature toms in South Texas and the Hill Country, combined with excellent nesting habitat conditions this year, could result in above-normal breeding activity. TPWD estimates about 72,000 hunters take part in Texas’ spring turkey season and take about 25,000 gobblers. Most of the state’s spring turkey hunting activity occurs in South Texas and in the Hill Country, where Texas Parks and Wildlife Department turkey program leader Jason Hardin noted timely rainfall could give the bird population a boost. The following items are compiled from recent Texas Parks and Wildlife Department law enforcement reports. * Numbers add up to legal trouble: Tarrant County Game Wardens Clint Borchardt and Chelle Mount were checking fishermen along the West Fork of the Trinity River on February 21. The first of two boats they checked had four fishermen. The section behind the last seat was filled to the top of the transom with 122 white bass. The second boat had two fishermen and 64 white bass in their ice chest. On March 8, 2010 the National Park Service (NPS) announced the Preferred Alternative of using Direct Reduction by Firearms, which incorporates the use of certified volunteers to reduce the elk population in TRNP. The following is a list of common questions and answers related to this announcement. These questions and answers are the North Dakota Game and Fish Department"s (NDGFD) interpretation of the Preferred Alternative based on discussions with the NPS, Governor Hoeven and Senator Dorgan. Who is the lead agency for implementing this Preferred Alternative? The NPS is the agency responsible for managing TRNP and this management action. Therefore, the NPS will be the lead in developing and implementing any actions intended to reduce elk numbers in the park. Read more..
