Mountain Lion Captured And Relocated

A mountain lion that had been traveling through Santa Fe neighborhoods was captured Wednesday morning near Santa Fe High School and relocated to a remote part of the Carson National Forest in northern New Mexico. Brandon Griffith, a Department of Game and Fish depredation specialist, shot the lion with tranquilizer darts at 10 a.m. in an apple tree near the intersection of Siringo Road and Calle Navidad, where it had been chased by dogs. The lion was taken to a veterinarian for treatment of a minor injury before it was transported to the release site. Read more..

Local Residents Assist in Rescuing Conservation Officer

Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment Conservation Officer Dennis Gast was responding on a snowmobile to a complaint of set lines on Otter Lake near Chassell in Houghton County last Saturday night when he fell through thin ice and found himself in eight feet of freezing water. Fortunately, Gast was able to alert nearby residents to assist him, preventing a serious situation from taking an even more grave turn. “Sometimes our officers find themselves in dangerous situations and settings, such as Officer Gast did while responding to this complaint,” said Sgt. Steve Burton, DNRE Law Enforcement supervisor at the Baraga Operations Service Center. “At these times, we sometimes require help from the public. Montana Conservation Projects to Receive RMEF Grants

Wildlife conservation projects in 11 Montana counties have been selected to receive grants from the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation in 2010. The new RMEF funding, totaling $221,725, will affect Beaverhead, Broadwater, Flathead, Lewis and Clark, Madison, Meagher, Missoula, Park, Powder River, Powell and Rosebud counties. “These grants are possible because of the successful banquets and fundraisers staged over the past year by our Montana volunteers—most of whom are elk hunters as well as devoted conservationists,” said David Allen, RMEF president and CEO. “Since 1984, our annual grants have helped complete 656 different projects in Montana with a combined value of more than $114 million.” Read more..
