Game And Fish Dismisses Employee Involved In Jaguar Capture

The Arizona Game and Fish Department today dismissed one of its employees as a result of the department’s ongoing internal administrative investigation into the events surrounding last year’s capture of the jaguar known as Macho B. Dismissed was Thornton W. Smith, 40, a wildlife technician for 12 years with the department and one of the field biologists involved in the placement and monitoring of traps used in a black bear and mountain lion research project that resulted in the initial capture of Macho B. The department dismissed Smith based on the employee’s own interview statements made during the course of the internal investigation. Chronic Wasting Disease Not Detected in New Hampshire’s Deer

New Hampshire’s white-tailed deer population once again showed no evidence of chronic wasting disease (CWD), based on monitoring data gathered during the 2009 hunting season. New Hampshire Fish and Game Deer Biologist Kent Gustafson recently received results from a federally certified veterinary diagnostic laboratory that indicate that all the deer tissue samples taken during last fall’s hunting season tested negative for CWD. A total of 439 tissue samples were tested. Chronic wasting disease is a neurological disorder that is fatal to white-tailed deer, mule deer, elk and moose, but the World Health Organization has concluded that there is no evidence that people can become infected with CWD. F&G Commission Ups Steelhead Limit On Salmon River

The Idaho Fish and Game Commission Thursday, March 18, approved a proposal to increase the limit on steelhead in the Salmon River drainage. Anglers may now buy a second steelhead card that allows them to catch and keep 40 steelhead, in addition to the 40 fish on the first card, allowing a total of 80 steelhead for the spring season. The increased limit applies only to waters within the Salmon River drainage now open to steelhead fishing. Those waters include the Salmon River from its mouth upstream to the posted boundary 100 yards downstream from the Sawtooth Fish Hatchery weir, near the town of Stanley, and the Little Salmon River from its mouth upstream to the U.S. Highway 95 bridge near Smokey Boulder Road. Georgia Seasonal Trout Streams Open March 27

It is time for pre-season trout stocking and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plan to stock more than one million trout in Georgia streams, rivers and small lakes by the end of the year. Many streams will be stocked by the end of the month and in time for opening day for seasonal trout stream fishing - Sat., March 27. “Our goal is to replenish all of our stocked streams before the end of the month,” says Perry Thompson, trout stocking coordinator for the Wildlife Resources Division. “Since stream flows are up, we’ll have an opportunity to spread our fish out well. Flow can drop quickly though, and we’ll manage accordingly.” Read more..
