The following is a timeline piece as reported by the Alaska Department of Game And Fish. 3-12-10: ADF&G Responds to Chignik Lake Fatality: The Alaska Department of Fish & Game (ADF&G) is continuing response efforts following yesterday’s Department of Public Safety investigation report that Candice Berner’s fatality was caused by animal attack, most likely wolves. An ADF&G representative arrived in Chignik Lake yesterday and proceeded to inspect the fatality site and obtain local information regarding recent wolf behavior in the area. Hatchery Supported Trout Water Open April 3 In North Carolina

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will open approximately 1,000 miles of hatchery-supported trout waters in 25 western counties at 7 a.m. on April 3. The season will run until one-half hour after sunset on Feb. 28, 2011. While fishing on hatchery-supported trout waters, anglers can harvest a maximum of seven trout per day, with no minimum size limits or bait restrictions. Hatchery-supported trout waters, marked by green-and-white signs, are stocked repeatedly from March until August every year. Many of these waters are stocked monthly, although some heavily fished waters are stocked more frequently. Read more..

CWD Found in Southwestern North Dakota Deer

North Dakota Game and Fish Department officials were notified this morning by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Veterinary Services that a sick-looking mule deer taken last fall in western Sioux County has tested positive for chronic wasting disease. This is the first time CWD has been detected in a North Dakota animal. Dr. Dan Grove, Game and Fish Department wildlife veterinarian, said a hunter in unit 3F2 shot an adult buck that did not appear to be healthy. “As we do with our targeted surveillance efforts, we collected the sample to test for CWD and bovine tuberculosis,” Grove said. DEC Enacts Closures and Restrictions for American Shad Fisheries

In an effort to help restore the American shad population in New York's waters, the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced new regulations that ban commercial and recreational fishing for the species in the Hudson River and the Marine and Coastal District of New York, effective today. The regulations also prohibit the sale or offering for sale of any American shad caught in New York State. "Unfortunately, the Hudson River shad stock has declined dramatically for more than a decade and even the restrictions enacted in 2008 have not triggered a rebound," DEC Commissioner Pete Grannis said. "As a result, closing the fishery for now is the best way to try to prevent this historically important species from permanently vanishing from the Hudson River ecosystem. It's not a step we take ...
