NJ Fishing Moratorium on Atlantic Coastal Sharks Delayed

Monday, March 22nd, 2010 Posted in Fishing News | No Comments »

New Jersey faced a moratorium on shark fishing this season due to non-compliance with regulations required in the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission's (ASMFC) Atlantic Coastal Sharks Interstate Fishery Management Plan. The federal government has agreed to give New Jersey until July 30 to implement the regulations necessary to avoid a moratorium on NJ's shark fishery. New Jersey's plan to implement the required regulations was outlined in a letter from DEP Commissioner Bob Martin to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. As a result of the commitment by Commissioner Martin, the federal government has delayed imposition of a fishing moratorium. A shark fishing moratorium may be imposed on July 30 if New Jersey fails to meet its regulation implementation schedule. Read more..

Take Extra Care On Waterways As Manatees Migrate

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) urges boaters to follow posted speed zones and watch for manatees as temperatures warm. Manatees are moving from warm-water sites to coastal areas, where they forage for food and rest and care for their young. The FWC requests that people take special care to avoid coming close to these marine mammals that are already stressed because of the prolonged cold winter. The migration of manatees occurs at the same time that the boating season heats up in Florida, with spring break bringing thousands of boaters to the state’s waterways. With the warmer temperatures, manatees will be even more vulnerable as they migrate and forage in the same waterways shared by many boaters along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. Read more..

NH Wildlife Action Plan Maps

The N.H. Wildlife Action Plan maps, which depict the location of habitat types and ecological condition of habitats for the state, have been revised, and new maps and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data are now available for the towns, groups and individuals that use them for research and planning. The updates to the Wildlife Action Plan maps and underlying GIS data incorporate newer biological data into the analysis of ecological conditions. The most significant changes to the maps are that forests are analyzed in smaller sections, making for more detailed and accurate information; and three more years of rare wildlife, plant and natural community data have been incorporated. The development and distribution of the maps, first released in 2006, is a high priority of the New Hampshire Wildlife Action Plan, which ... Read more..

March Razor Clam Opener To Proceed

The results of marine toxin tests are in, confirming that clams are safe to eat, and clearing the way for the spring’s first razor-clam digs on ocean beaches later this month. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) today set March 26 - April 1 openings at various ocean beaches. Prospective diggers should note that the opening starts on evening tides, then switches to morning tides for the final four days, said Dan Ayres, WDFW coastal shellfish manager. "The digs span the seasonal change, when the lowest tides shift from evening to morning hours," Ayres said. "As in past months, razor-clam digging will be allowed after noon for the first three days of the opening, but will then switch to morning hours starting Monday, March 29." Read more..
