Rescue teams continued the search today for Alan J. Benjamin, age 65, of Rochester, Vt., whose kayak was found overturned in the Connecticut River yesterday, March 25, 2010. Minnesota recently petitioned the U.S. Fish and Wildlife (FWS) to once again remove gray wolves in the Great Lakes region from the Endangered Species List. If successful, the move would allow the state to resume management of its wolf population. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) filed the petition on March 17 and asked that a response be made within 90 days. DNR Commissioner Mark Holsten has been quoted in the media saying that federal officials “agree our wolf management plan ensures the long-term survival of the wolf. They have seen it in action during 2007 and 2008, when the wolves in the Great Lakes Region were delisted.” Read more..

Harassment by any means, including harassment by phone, e-mail, or over the Internet, is prohibited by the bill. Additional provisions in the bill help protect the confidentiality of information obtained by Idaho from license sales. This provision helps ensure that the anti’s cannot obtain sportsmen’s personal information from their license data. Read more..

Fail to Pass at CITES, Hopeful for Future Efforts to Conserve Species DOHA, Qatar – Assistant Secretary of the Interior Tom Strickland today said he was disappointed that the parties to the Convention on Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) did not vote to protect shark species that have been depleted by over-harvest but expressed hope that a foundation has been laid to protect the species in the future. “This is a significant setback for these marine species, but we view it as only a temporary setback. We will redouble our efforts with other countries around the world to fight for the protection of marine species imperiled by international trade,” said Strickland, who headed the U.S. delegation to CITES' 15th Conference of Parties, which ended today.
