The Department of Environmental Protection today lifted a temporary ban on shellfish harvesting in the waters of Raritan Bay, Sandy Hook Bay, the Navesink River and the Shrewsbury River, closed on March 17 because of pollution from a heavy rainfall during a nor’easter. The DEP’s latest sampling of shellfish determined the waters are safe for harvesting to resume. The reopening of these waters is effective Saturday, March 27. Advanced testing procedures now enable the DEP to safely reopen waters more swiftly, allowing baymen to return to their harvesting work sooner than had been previously possible. The NRA Foundation’s Friends of NRA program has announced that the final Kimber Marias, donated by Kimber Manufacturing in 2008, has been sold. Available through the Friends of NRA sponsor program, the shotguns have raised in excess of $700,000 for the shooting sports. “We could not be more pleased with the success of the Kimber donation and sponsor program,” said Kyle Weaver, Managing Director of NRA Field Operations. “A contribution of this size and value from an industry leader like Kimber not only generates a tremendous amount of money, but helps further the Friends of NRA brand. The 2010 drawing for Arizona elk and antelope hunt permit-tags has been completed, and the 118,806 applicants can now visit the Arizona Game and Fish Department’s Web site at www.azgfd.gov/draw or call (602) 942-3000 to see if they have been drawn. Be prepared to provide your department identification number, plus your birth date to access your specific draw information. A White Mountain hiker was rescued Sunday evening, March 28, 2010, after surviving a perilous fall down the slope of King Ravine. On Sunday afternoon, hikers Douglas Soholt, age 25, of Colorado, and Nathaniel Blauss, age 28, of Hanson, Mass., were hiking the trails on the north side of Mt. Adams. At about 1:30 PM, after having successfully reached the summit of Mt. Adams, they were beginning their descent on the Gulfside Trail located to the north of the Mt. Adams summit. Soholt lost his footing, falling on the icy alpine slab that is prevalent above treeline at this time of year, and began to slide downward into King Ravine.
